One of the Best films ever made that no one will see

This film simply blew me away. "The Piano" is awesome, but Campion will be hard pressed to top "Angel". All of the performances are amazing, but Kerry Fox should have won an Oscar. Her willingness to wear a rotten teeth prosthetic makes all the accolades Charlize Theron received for "Monster" seem very hollow indeed. Fox was nothing short of brilliant as she presented the conflicting emotions and reactions to her situation. The young lady who portrayed her as a frizzy haired youth was also outstanding, and the scene where she reads to her siblings and then they dance fairylike in the yard...MAGIC.
The first hour of the film is effortlessly charming, and the second hour is one of the most harrowing I've seen. It's rare to feel genuinely fearful for a character in a film, but her escape from the mental hospital made me weep like a little girl. That it is all true is even more compelling. There are moments in the film that transcend motion picture filmmaking and vault this gem into the realm of cinema as art. That it is the true story of Campions fellow Kiwi makes it even richer. Jane Campion is a serious artist as Frame was and it's truly a shame that so few people will ever see this film.

I would just like to say I 100% agree! Congratulations on this well written post.

I think that what you wrote about this movie is perfect. I can't do the same since my english is not that good. But it is such a pity that it did not have
a more commercial release or distribution, because it is very inspiring and beautiful.

This was absolutely one of my favorite movies in college....so glad to read people are still 'discovering' it. Well-written post and I agree that Campion has not topped this film.

I urge everyone in the entire WORLD to read 'Owls Do Cry' by Janet Frame. I have not yet finished it (it's that fantastic) but it is one of the most beautiful, delicate, aching books I have ever read. Similar to the genius of Tim Winton in 'Cloudstreet'. Absolutely stunning. Be ready to have your heart pulled out through your mouth. Read it.

I LOVED this movie! i saw it in 1991 in Amsterdam while on vacation in a little dingy movie house that sold beer and it had dutch subtitles so it was quite an emotional and memorable feeling all the way around. I remember falling in love with everything about it. so heart wrenching. Some of the best acting i have ever seen. Your post says it all.

I discovered this gem at my local library and I checked it out when I read the back of the DVD and saw that it was released by the Criterion Collection.

If you like the film and performance fine but I don't know why you feel the need to insult Charlize Theron's amazing performance to express your like for this one. That's a bit unfair. Theron's performance wasn't hollow just becuase she wore prosthetics. It was a powerful performance emotionally and deserved all the accolades. Whether this actress wore rotten teeth or Theron wore fake teeth, should have nothing to do with how great the acting is. That's not what makes a performance great.

You misread my comment. I stated that the "accolades" Charlize Theron received for uglying herself up in "Monster" seemed hollow. I had no problem with her performance, just with everyone going on and on about her being so daring as to stunt her naturally beautiful appearance. Everyone knows Charlize Theron is a beautiful actress and model, but Kerry Fox, outside of her native New Zealand, did not have that kind of notoriety, and to appear in a movie with such bizarre hair and disgusting teeth was bold. Compare the two visually and see who has the more disturbing appearance. You can still see that it's Charlize Theron, despite the makeup, but gorgeous Kerry Fox completely disappears. Kind of like Bruce Willis in "Jackal". It's always Bruce, no matter how they make him up.
