What was the significance of photo?

The father took some pcitures of the siblings on a vaction/ holiday time together. What were the siblings discussing about the photo ? There was this strange look on their faces but I just did not get the relevance in the movie. Who was missing in the photo? What was the significance?

When the pictures come back, the family is looking at them, but Myrtle's image was blurred and undeveloped. "Myrtle's missing" was said as if it were an omen. She drowned shortly after this scene.

Oh. I was wondering the same thing. I was interrupted and I had to rewind the film a couple times. I thought they were looking at the picture AFTER she died.

Thanks for the explanation. Couldn't figure out what was the deal with the photo. Now I realize the connection with Myrtle drowning shortly thereafter.

A honest and humbling portrait of an artist/author whose only real problem was her excruciating shyness. Really enjoyed the rendition, although a somewhat lengthy picture! (Trilogy all in one)
Especially enjoyed the cinematography of the local New Zealand landscape. Breathtakingly beautiful.

After she dies they also make a point of discussing an edited photo of her from that same family outing. One "with an added arm."
