Such a dumb ending

Do you think Rob stay in toch with his real family? Is this a true story?

reply

The ending to this movie was anything BUT dumb. No, it was not a true story. And yes, I'm sure he stayed in touch with his real family, cause if you look on the note he left for Ruth, his home address is on it. But since this isn't a true story it doesn't really matter does it?

Dumb ending? Please!! It's a wonderful ending.

How would you have ended it differently?

reply

I don't feel comfortable posting my mailing address. Can you send if via this site?

reply

It wasn't a dumb ending at all. the only thing I wish that'd been done differently was that the ending was a bit abrupt. All of a sudden she reads the letter, the family looks at her, and it's over... I'm just starting to cry really good, then the credits start rolling! grrrr

You're crazy. This is one of the best made-for-tv movies ever. It was a beautiful, and heartwrenching, film. I used to cry buckets whenever I'd see it. If I put it on again (it's been quite a while, but I have it on tape), I'm sure I'd cry again. And, I remember in some interviews that they conducted with cast members that Joan Van Ark practically teared up in talking about working with Patty Duke. She said that working with her was an honor and a true gift.

I loved this movie...great for a made-for-tv effort.

Thanks for the story, *beep* I love Patty Duke. She's a generous person, both in her acting, and elsewhere. She reached out to a person with a bipolar disorder on Oprah (and does so with many people afflicted with it).

Read her autobiography Call Me Anna, if you haven't already done so. It's amazing...I was exhausted just reading about her life, and she actually lived it. She's great, and I'm happy she pulled through.

I loved the ending, I watch the show several times a year, and it
brings me to tears all the time.
If this had been a true story, I would have to say that Robert
lucked out with two terrific families who loved him so much.

I love Patty Duke, she is the best, and I have always enjoyed
Richard Masur. Stephew Dorf was just perfect for this role,
and will be a major star in the near future. I just watched
him in "Cold Creek Manor", last week. Talk about change, he is
now 34 years old, great built, guess he's been working out, and
still as cute as ever.

The ending was good and it resolved issues. The real family found out the truth and Robert realized that he belonged with his adopted parents because they were his family too.

I finally got it on an original vhs from the UK and for the first time I paid more attention to the movie and it was a beautiful revelation to see that the letter Robert leaves for his real mother includes his name and home address, because that was one thing that really upset me, that I didn't know if they would ever hear from each other again and so on, so seeing this finally put my heart to rest.

I loved the ending. It was a nice way of rounding things off and showing that although Rob did feel for his real parents, his life was with his adoptive parents now and he could not leave them.

I could not have thought of a better ending for this film!

I agree that ending makes the film. What I admire with that film is that it did not fell into all the cliché you would normally get in those type of made for TV drama.
There was no big soppy scene were he told the family he was Greg and everybody hugged instead the writers had found a very smart and subtle way for Robert to tell who he was to his mother.
I watched it again last night and I really think it's one of the best made for TV films I have seen, great acting and great writing.

Have to say one thing, I would have liked to see at least one bit of reaction of her brother, and/or some more seconds of Ruth's face crying happy tears in the arms of her husband

reply

I completely agree. Patty Duke never got a chance to hug her own son. He wrote a letter and went back to his adoptive home. Not that he did a bad thing. But he didn't let his bio mom hug him as HIS MOM.

That would have been the icing on the cake.

Just my opinion.

I think this is a case of the possibility of giving everything and spoiling the audience versus giving them a taste of what it will be like.
Maybe I'm too used to seeing the movie, but I don't know if I'd have liked them to show a hug, because maybe it wouldn't have been as sobby as I would have wanted it. Instaed the scene is quite short, shows enough emotion and crying to let me have my moment unconditionally. I cry because I can imagine what goes through her mind and I would totally lose it.
Bottom line: it could have ruined the whole movie. After all, he certainly maintained his composure all those days he was staying with them. Would he sob incontrollably at the first real mother and son hug?

reply

I respectfully disagree. The fact that she never knew what happened to her son. The fact that this guy found out he WAS her son. The fact that he spent time in her home and knew all the time that she was indeed his biological mother, he OWED her the five minutes of holding him. We all know he has other parents, he loves them, etc. etc. But Patty Duke did nothing to deserve losing her child.

This guy finds out who she is, seeks her out, finds her, spends time with her, and writes her a note? If that were me, believe me I would not have been smiling. The first thing that would have crossed my mind would have been "And he couldn't just say goodbye in PERSON??" He writes me a note???

Maybe I feel this way because my own son left home 12 years ago (he's an addict)never to be seen again. He became addicted to online gaming. No one thinks that is serious. Believe me, online gaming is as serious as Drinking, drugs, smoking. It ruins lives.

So maybe I'm in a sensitive place in my head. Patty Duke deserved better.

This is just my humble opinion. lol lol
