How come he just stared into space for 1/2 hor after trying for so long to call the man?
I think he realized that he has to explain everything to him again every time... And he doesn't have a lot of time... So he decided to see him personally since it would be easier to convince someone in person than over the phone... At least, that is what I thought
IT took him less than a minute to convince him the first time.
shareI may be granting too much subtlety to the story / film, but I got the impression he realized he didn't want to hear the answer that 2nd time. If Rosenbluth gave him the bad answer, all hope would end; the other way, not knowing, he still had hope, an uncertainty. Then, in the end, he finally had to know the answer.

'Groundhog day' definetely based itself on this story (though it's not a bad thing).
The confusion at first, then sadness, anger, even madness and desperation at the very end..Very similar to Groundhog.Except the sad ending ^^
