Love this show

I love this show and I'm not even Brithish. It comes on my local PBS station on Saturday nights and I record it on my DVR if I'm not going to be home. The characters are wonderful. My favorite character is Diana. She really carries the show with her biting wit and dry humor. The rest of the cast are funny too, particularly Jane and Harvey.

I like the show and LOVE Tom and Diana, but I find it to be uneven in many respects. Diana is the only thing constant in the show that made me keep coming back. The rest of the characters went through really good plots countered by lame plots. I was overall disappointed with the series final story arcs, with exception to Tom's bid and success in marrying Diana...well, you all know to what I refer without spoiling it. I did enjoy the final episode.

I just watched this show (I've only seen one ep.) for the first time yesterday. I really like it so far. Too bad they don't have any shows with witty, cantankerous older people over here in the U.S. We're pretty much stuck with horrible, formulaic sitcoms starring nit-wits who border on mild retardation. Anyway, this show may be "my show" for now. Since the HBO series shows are off season, I have absolutely nothing...nothing!

Despite my criticisms of the show, it definitely is better than most of American television's offerings.

I like a lot of the Britcoms, but this one is my favorite. I started watching it years ago in America and am now getting it in Ireland. If any of you are familiar with Hallmark Cards "Maxine", I think Diana is the living embodiment of Maxine. I'm almost 61 and I want to have Diana's wit and gumption when I get her age. LOL Which is just around the corner.

This is one of my all-time favourites, it was nice to see all these older people with such spirit & life. I also liked the fact where no character was totally like another - in so many shows, you've got a few characters who are almost identical, which can get dull. Sweet Tom, fiery Diana, soft-hearted Jane, sleazy Harvey - all fantastic. And I always had a soft spot for Basil the Sex Pistol - he could give any other sitcom Lothario a run for their money, lol.

Hi Claire
Actually, you could count one US sitcom in the list. I am referring to Golden Girls (Bea Arthur has a physical and a general demeanor that reminds me a bit of Diana)
The show had also the same intention as the one in the UK. To remind the world that to be old is not the same as being dead.
I hear Ms. Cole is a fervent activist for Senior citizens' rights.
The show depicting the real estate fraud, seems to serve that purpose. I remember the moment in which Diana is asked (on an interview on TV) to talk about it, she beckons the camera and in that moment she seems to be out of character, talking not just to the fictitious viewers but to the general population of elderly people.
I thought it was a moment of genius in this show.

Tee hee, this is one of my all-time favorite shows. I'm not British, either, in fact, I'm 17 and American, haha. Diana Trent is simply brilliant, and Basil...Oh goodness me. :)
