What's with the milk??

Since watching series 1 again I has anyone else noticed the sheer amount of milk the Wheatley household drink - they are always sat at the kitchen table drinking milk - in almost every episode so far - what's the deal with that? It's like they have some sort of deal goin on with Dairy Crest....

It's a very American idea to have 'milk and cookies' as a snack, and since The Upper Hand's scripts were lifted straight from Who's The Boss, they left in that aspect. You might notice the love of cricket also, this was translated from Baseball doesn't really have the same feel.

I can understand the idea of lifting the storyline from existing scripts. But they could have had different settings. Or a different set.

The cricket thing is kind of funny... it was baseball on WTB because Tony is an ex-baseball player. You would assume the sport they would fixate on in this show would be footie since Charlie's an ex-footballer. Funny. =)

Mind you it was footie at first. The last line of the first episode is "You're in goal".

For some people the connotation of cricket in this country, is very much of English people sat on a green. Eating cucumber sandwiches, and shouting; "Oh jolly good shot, sir." All very English and polite. And dare I say it, a bit upper-class.

It's a version of England that doesn't really exist any more, if it ever did in the first place. But it's an old-fashioned ideal that some people like to cling to.

Maybe they mentioned cricket a lot because Diane was supposed to be a fairly successful, affluent business woman. Maybe the writers thought that cricket would be something that would be enjoyed by this sort of person. Or at least thought the viewers at home would think this.
