Opinions about this show

I am a big fan of british sitcoms, I watched a lot of them and was rarely disapointed. Few weeks ago me and my girlfriend started watching The Upper Hand, and I've got to be honest: nothing ever surprised us, some dialogues are really badly written, there is also no balance between episodes (sometimes everything happens too fast, sometimes too slow ...), a lot of times it is not even funny, it is full of cliches and so on ...

But there is just something about this show that got us totally hooked on it - and I have no idea what it is ... it may be due to the fact that this is kind of a hybrid between soap opera and comedy, but I can't tell for sure :D

Your opinions? I wonder what did the British think about the show when it was still running on TV (since it ran for 7 whole seasons)? Any first hand experiences?

I personally have always loved the show. I think the balance problems are caused by the fact that it is based on a US show and in a lot of cases uses the original scripts.

I just rewatched all seven series and granted the last few series are definetly not as good as the earlier ones I enjoyed it all until the end. I must say though what a dire final episode it felt more like a end of series episode with a conclusion in the next series. That was the only bummer. Was the show expecting to do an eighth series but was cancelled by ITV?

In the UK it was regarded as really cheesy but almost good-bad as a result, and it was kind of cosy, warm, safe, family-friendly comedy. No one regarded it as great comedy, but it was enjoyable enough.

Honor Blackman is a national treasure in the UK, so she was a big draw.

Joe McGann was also considered a "housewives' favourite" kind of heartthrob.

It certainly wouldn't compare to Fawlty Towers, The Good Life, To the Manor Born etc classic comedy.

I was a kid when this was on, but I watched it every week. Remember liking it.

Recently I bought the whole series and am watching my way through it. A lot of is quite silly, and it's not what I'd call side splittingly funny. The entire plot seems to revolve around to people secretly fancying each other. But it's cosy and watchable. Sort of gentle comedy.
