My problem with James and Donna was mainly in their treatment towards Maddy. They were terrible friends to her. Maddy was a very sweet girl and they knowingly got her mixed up in dangerous situations. James develops an instant crush and starts leading her on. Donna is threatened by how much Maddy looks like Laura and starts trying to "out-Laura" Maddy by trying to act all cool and aloof. And then starts starts treating her in a cold, passive aggressive way.
Donna basically takes all of the underlying jealousy and anger that she felt towards Laura and aimed it unfairly Maddy. James only backs off when she is finally fed up of him blowing hot and cold and Donna sulking. And she politely tells him to just choose Donna over her.
Also when they find out that Maddy has been brutally murdered they are kind of upset not exactly devastated. Discuss it for a little while and then back to talking about their romance.
Regarding the singing scene. James's singing aside I actually like it. You are tricked in to a false sense of security because of the cheesiness of it. But then you have that moment when Maddy is suddenly looking at James with this confident, flirtatious smirk on her face. She totally channels Laura. Which sparks Bobs interest and he suddenly appears and crawls towards her. That scene freaked me out when I saw it the first time as a kid lol.
