Never cared for Elaine

And once I heard that she was shoe horned into the series by the network and not part of Jerry and Larry's original idea it kind of bothered me. She just doesn't make me laugh at all, shes been involved in funny scenes but its never really her doing shes just always "around" when the other characters are being funny. Even her supposed classic funny scenes don't do much for me, like the "little kicks" sure its funny because other characters are making fun of her but not because of anything she did. I can bet I'll be the minority on this opinion but its just the natural reaction I've always had watching this show on an almost daily basis for the last 20+ years. The show would of been fine with George Jerry and Kramer as the main cast.

I guess that's why she's won so many Emmys, she just not funny.

reply

The OP said she did not care for Elaine. She was not talking about the actress.

I find Elaine my least fav character but she is essential to a show that I have been watching half my life.

👎

Being stuck in the subway
Meeting Joey (or Crazy Joe Davola) in his apartment
Interview with Mrs. Landis (and meeting Mr. Pitt)
Taking over for J. Peterman- and the messes she created
Returning to New York with Puddy

For the most part, those don't involve any of the other three. And they're all hilarious.

Why do they give out letter jackets to marching band? It's not a sport! We all know it!

I'm with you.
She did nothing at all on Seinfeld that was as outstanding as Jason or Michael Richards' work.
I liken her a lot to Robin Quivers on Howard Stern. She was always there. There for a long time. It's just a matter of time til she does (or says) one or two funny things.
She was just as un-memorable on Saturday Night Live. For those of you that didn't even know that, try looking her up on Y/tube. She wasn't exactly Cheri Oteri or Kristin Wiig.

And Emmy's don't mean shít, except that maybe your competition sucked less than you did.

"I must be crazy to be in a loony bin like this."

“She wasn't exactly Cheri Oteri”

Ouch.

If she had been replaced by a TR-6, I wonder if anyone would have noticed.

reply

TR-6? I prefer to think of her as... Elaine.

reply

She's very... what's the word..? Supercilious.

reply

Well, you have to admit that Elaine is very alert-- a warm person.

So I guess I'm in the majority who feels that they indeed needed Elaine to break up the monotony.

Larry and Jerry were sort of fixated on Abbott & Costello and The Three Stooges as comedy gods, so in this case I think the network suits were right to force them out of their "No Girls Allowed" comfort zone.

Without Elaine, it would be more like a rebooted "Three Stooges". Not that there's anything wrong with it-- if you're a Stooges fan.

Maybe it will help to think of Elaine as the lemon wedge that tarts up the drink.

reply

She's the Seinfeld version of Peter Tork.

reply

Are you gonna impugn an entire Monkee?

They were pretty rough, but they had something.
What was it?
I think it was the trousers.

reply

Heeeeeeey. Peter Tork was a great Monkee. Leave Peter out of this

reply

what are you some sort of a misogynist

reply

"what are you some sort of a misogynist "

No one said they don't like Elaine BECAUSE she's a woman. So is treating men and women equally, and treating them completely based on their merit MISOGYNY now?

If we are not pedestalizing women and treating them with kid gloves, that's misogyny now?

Did you not hear how MISANDRISTIC the Elaine character is? I mean, what are you, some sort of hypocrite?

"I am not a lesbian. I hate men, but I am not a lesbian."

Can you IMAGINE this genders reversed? If what Elaine said is not misandry, then the reverse wouldn't be misogyny, RIGHT?

"I am not gay. I hate women, but I am not gay."

Would ANY TV show ever air THAT?

Look at the pedestals women already live on, then look at what miserable mud most men wallow in, and then come again with your misogynist-accusations, you chauvinist pig.

I wasn't really crazy for Elaine.

It's too bad the guy they got to play her father (Lawrence Tierney) turned out to be such a crazy fvck. He was a great character and if he hadn't been such a psycho on the set, he was going to have reoccurring appearances.

reply

Yeah he was funny, I never knew he was crazy until watching a special feature awhile ago on the movie Reservoir Dogs which he was in and they mentioned what a crazy guy he was and was really hard to work with. Then I looked him up and found the story about seinfeld haha what a nut.
