Arthur Pettibone and Sara Stanley

Arthur Pettibone and Sara Stanley - a couple that could've been ;)

I loved Zachary Ansley as Arthur in Road to Avonlea and I always thought he was underutilized. They should've really developed a story with him and Sara. They could've shown that after Arthur gets over his infatuation with Felicity, leaves Avonlea and returns, he and Sara become good friends - perhaps because of their mutual fondness for reading, literature or some such... They start spending a lot of time together just talking, exchanging ideas, advising each other and eventually love blossoms. Arthur sees Sara (besides just being extremely beautiful) as his intellectual and emotional equal. But in the end it doesn't work out and they break up for various reasons - Arthur has to leave Avonlea and Sara has to go to Montreal.

This story-line could've then been tied into what's shown in Season 6, Episode 5 'Comings and Goings' when everyone starts suspecting that Sara and Arthur are carrying around. They could've shown it as this is the first time Sara and Arthur are meeting again after such a long time and a lot has changed in both their lives. They're mature and worldly-wise and view each other as dear friends who can confide in each other about stuff no one else probably understands. So Sara's chance meeting with Arthur at night and her confession to him about her future plans sparks rumors of them rekindling their romance - rumors which are eventually of course categorically denied by both. Both of them probably just have a laugh over it at the end and promise to stay in touch as they both leave to pursue their own destiny - Arthur with his vet practice and Sara seeking a literary career in Paris!

As a couple - Sarah Polley and Zachary Ansley looked so nice together (especially in 'Comings and Goings') that I felt even more that an opportunity had been missed! I feel that such a storyline would've made portrayal of romances shown on the show more rooted and real. Felicity and Gus love each other and get married. Same for Olivia and Jasper. Felix and Izzy get together. With the Sara-Arthur story, they could've explored a different aspect of love - that people part as lovers but still love each other as friends. They didn't really explore Sara's romantic track at all. She shares her first romantic kiss with Booth Elliott at the end of Season 5 and then she appears directly in that one episode in Season 6 and then off she goes to Paris! I wish they'd stayed more with Sara!

Does anyone else here feel the same? I've been catching up on 'Road to Avonlea' a lot lately. Just love the show! For me it's like... whatever may happen in my life, I always have 'Road to Avonlea' to go lose myself in!

Hey, thanks for your reply! I wonder whether the reason behind Sarah Polley's exit from RTA has to do with the fact that the show's creators shifted the focus from Sara to Felicity. RTA started with the focus on Sara but instead of staying with her, they sort of diverted their attention to Felicity and then brought in Sara only in spurts. Sarah Polley was really underutilized and instead of playing second fiddle, she must've thought it best to leave the show gracefully and let the show's creators continue to focus on Felicity without having to rack their brains about writing material for Sara. I'd love to attempt writing fan fiction but I've never done it before and I absolutely have no illusions about it being an easy job! In fact I guess it'll be quite a challenge - to get into the heads of the characters you're writing about and also staying true to the nature of the show... But I feel strongly about Arthur and Sara so I should perhaps try writing a fan-fic :)

As far as couples go, I liked Gus and I liked Felicity as individual characters but I have to admit that as you mentioned, I too wasn't particularly sold on their romance. Unlike Mag Ruffman and R H Thompson who shared great chemistry on screen, Gema Z and Michael Mahonen just didn't. In fact Cedric Smith and Lally Cadeau had more chemistry than Gema and Michael. I absolutely loved Alec and Janet. For me they were the most real couple. Lally Cadeau as Janet epitomizes the kind, funny, giving, approachable and always-huggable mother to me! She was brilliant as Janet!

As I mentioned, I've been watching RTA again nowadays. I'm on Season 6 currently and I saw 'A Fox Tale' last night. The ending of that episode is so sweet when Izzy tells Felix she didn't help him for money but because of him and then she says "You take a lot of looking after Felix King, you know that?" That was so touching, I teared up! Sigh! I wonder if someone will ever make a show as beautiful as Road to Avonlea again. It'd be tough for any show of this genre to outshine RTA in my estimation!

A story about the Kings as children sounds like a splendid idea! That would be quite hilarious and heartbreaking I would think - Alec as young boy trying to live up to the standards set by a know-it-all elder sister like Hetty! Olivia, a cute-as-a-button little girl having a string of admirers wherever she goes! Hetty, of course, trying to be the King family flag-bearer, over-protective of her younger siblings and ready to put up a fight for them! And of course there'd be Roger as well, not to mention Sara's mom Ruth. Don't think I'm missing anyone else! It's a great idea Shelly but quite an ambitious undertaking I would imagine. I'd love to read it though - they'd all be so adorable! Alec and Hetty would have the same relationship as Felix and Felicity I would think... you know, they can't stand each other but can't live without each other either!

I didn't know Sarah Polley had differences with Disney over political viewpoints. Wasn't Sullivan Entertainment responsible for the show? I think RTA did quite a decent job at balancing everything. Perhaps yes, they could've had an episode or two more revolving around what was happening socially and politically at the time but I guess it's not easy to accommodate an overly serious subject in what is basically a feel-good family drama and still do justice to both the issue as well as the nature of the show. There's always the risk of over-simplifying and earning a bad rep for feigning concern over social issues. I guess Disney/Sullivan might've thought it best to stick to things they know they can do well and to which the audience will reciprocate positively.

It is indeed wonderful to catch up with Road to Avonlea again. I have to admit that I like it more than Anne of Green Gables! When I went to PEI last September, for me the "I have arrived" moment didn't come when I was standing in front of or inside Green Gables in Cavendish. It was when I visited Dalvay-by-the-Sea! I had come to the White Sands Hotel and nothing else mattered! It was quite emotional really! Unfortunately the hotel was completely boarded up. A few people, probably RTA fans like me, were loitering around, trying to get a peek inside. I was quite disappointed - my dreams of enjoying high tea inside the White Sands dashed! But I was just glad to be there and have a picture taken with the hotel! I'm sure I'll go there once again with a proper chalked out plan! Have you ever been inside the hotel? How was it?

Wow! You've got amazing ideas there! I don't remember much of Roger in the series. In 'Story Girl' the book, he's quite sweet and indulgent with the kids. I quite liked him. He is indeed likely to have the kind of relationship with Alec as you have imagined. I can imagine Hetty being sandwiched between the two, not entirely sure whose side to take without offending the other! I'm not very sold on the idea of Olivia being like Cecily. If we go by Olivia's character in the books, then yes perhaps, she's likely to have been quite a sweet docile child (like Cecily). But somehow when I imagine Mag Ruffman as a little girl, I always imagine Olivia to be a little firecracker right from childhood! But of course, we have to go by the book :)

I love how you have imagined Olivia and Jasper's story - it's very realistic, plausible and touching! I love the idea of Montgomery being more of a King than a Dale but his son being more of Dale than a King! I can imagine Jasper jokingly saying to himself, "Ah, revenge is sweet!" Don't Olivia and Jasper have a daughter too? I saw one in 'An Avonlea Christmas'!

Your future for Felix is rather bleak I must say! I wouldn't like to think of his future being mostly full of self-destruction and frustration. Perhaps when he comes back to PEI after his (mis)adventures in NY, he's completely broken down and probably at the lowest point in his life (since Izzy's also married now) but then he goes back to the White Sands Hotel. Perhaps Hetty, in her will, passes part-ownership of the hotel to Felix. It would seem plausible since she partly owned the hotel and of all the Kings, it was only Felix and she that actually worked at the White Sands. Besides, Hetty knows that Felix always loved working at TWS, that's where he first started his professional life and the Hotel kind of taught him how to be a man. So after returning to PEI, Felix initially goes through a long self-pitying, self-loathing phase but with the help of Alec, Janet, Felicity, Daniel and the others, he slowly recovers. His recovery starts on the King Farm itself were he starts helping Daniel on the farm just so that he can contribute in some way and to distract his mind. Being on the farm, with the animals and having that communion with nature and the Island again helps Felix overcome his depression and that's when he decides that he's going to continue to stay in PEI and go back to the White Sands and become a "Hotel-man" all over again. Later - perhaps in his early 30s - he also meets a nice girl and gets married!

The Pettibones are alright I guess. I'm sure even Arthur himself would not have imagined that one day he would be the one closest to his father! Izzy probably gets married and leaves PEI to settle somewhere else in Canada. Morgan as you said keeps gallivanting all over Europe. Arthur has a successful practice in Halifax, gets married and has children and comes often to Avonlea to see his father and Muriel!

About Hetty... hmmmm... Romney's son's angle is nice. Perhaps Romney's son falls for Dora! How about that? A bit silly I know! But perhaps... Rachel Lynde passes away (sob!), Davy and Dora grow up. Davy is itching to explore the world. Perhaps he becomes a professional baseball player and represents the Island (initially) and then Canada at several international tournaments... He keeps falling in and out of love but eventually marries a real beauty and settles in Toronto or something. Dora, always the sincere student, does well in school. She isn't particularly ambitious and continues higher studies in Halifax because she just sees it as the next logical thing to do. On one of her visits home to Rose Cottage, she meets Romney Penhallow and his son. Romney's son falls head over heels in love with Dora and... eventually they get married. Hetty and Romney initially find the whole thing quite strange and awkward but they finally accept their relationship. Hetty's happy that things have sort of come full circle and yes, she passes away peacefully...

Gus and Felicity... I do agree that the idea of Gus being landlocked (never heard the term being used for people but I like it!) is indeed unbelievable. The fact that he actually goes back to the seas and dies in a ship-wreck or something is quite tough though... But perhaps Felicity doesn't think it right to deprive Gus from doing what his heart really desires. So perhaps Gus becomes a Captain of a ship and after a couple of successful voyages succumbs to the sea. Very sad indeed... Gus Pike's violin theme was my favorite piece of music from the show! Just so haunting and beautiful!

I'm not sure whether bringing in Peter Craig is going to work... I don't remember how often Peter appears in the series but it's not much. I don't even remember whether he was there in Season 2. But in the books, Peter worships the ground Felicity walks on. So perhaps yes, he could come back in Felicity's life. But I can't somehow imagine her hooking up with him... I dunno... At the end of An Avonlea Christmas, Felicity tells Cecily she's pregnant and she decides to take up the program for communicating with deaf children through correspondence. Perhaps she opens a school for the deaf or a clinic... something like that... and after Gus's death, remarries a doctor or teacher or someone... Dunno... I'm not entirely sure about this!

I think having Cecily die of TB is perhaps making it a bit too much like L M Alcott's Little Women. You know when Felicity opens the orphanage in Avonlea, I couldn't help thinking that the inspiration had been Jo March! And making Cecily like Beth... I'm not quite sold on the idea. Perhaps Cecily becomes a skilled horseback rider and opens a ranch that houses lots of horses which she buys and sells. She instructs students in horseback riding and her opinion in valued by all. She moves out of Avonlea but only because the ranch needs a larger space. Probably she moves to the Island's Kings County and settles there. Alec helps her out a lot on her ranch often getting Felicity and Daniel's kids along with him so that they can spend some time with their aunt and play with the horses!

I like how you have imagined Daniel's story unraveling. And same goes for Sarah and Andrew as well. Sarah choosing to stay single is indeed very "her". But just the way she keeps in touch with Andrew, I want her to stay in the life of all the other characters as well. She corresponds with Felix and the others. She acts as Felix's sounding board when he returns to PEI. Her opinion is frank, perhaps even harsh at times but it's always in Felix's best interests and her tough love helps him stand on his own two feet again. She comforts Felicity too and shows her that being a single woman is not that bad. Perhaps she visits Avonlea when Hetty's on her deathbed and is there in Rose Cottage for a good month or so, taking care of Hetty till Hetty passes away. A trip back to Avonlea proves to be very inspiring for Sarah - a fact that surprises even her. Being back on the Island proves to be very stimulating and she does a lot of writing while there. After Hetty's death, Sarah leaves and goes back to Europe or wherever else she's staying.

So that's my take on our dear Villagers! Hope you don't mind me giving my opinion on your plans for the characters! I agree with you about RTA being mostly unseen and unknown. At least you are in the US where people know about Anne of Green Gables and Montgomery! I'm from India and very few people know about AOGG here. Road to Avonlea is a long shot! I haven't met a single other RTA fan in India! What a pity! I'm just glad that I stumbled upon AOGG on Hallmark ALL those years ago and instantly got hooked to it! Truly "providential" as Rachel Lynde would say! I read the novel after watching the movie! Then Hallmark started showing RTA and oh gosh... at the risk of sounding corny, I have to say that it was love at first sight! I've loved many TV shows over the years - Gilmore Girls, Blossom, Picket Fences, Monarch of the Glen etc - but RTA is my absolute favorite! I keep coming back to it and I feel I'm gonna grow old with it! I do wanna return to PEI again for sure! But I also wanna go on a RTA-shooting-location scouting expedition to Ontario! I really wanna see where they shot everything! I hope you're able to have your house on the cliff next to the lighthouse! And for my sake, I hope you aren't averse to taking in house-guests who're fellow RTA-maniacs ;)

I agree with most of what you've written. I'm just not very sure about Cecily's death and Gus's subsequent return to sailing. Perhaps the latter can be timed earlier... If Cecily dies and Felix leaves the Island and the country, it would obviously be a big blow to the King family and I reckon Felicity would want to hold on to her loved ones in such circumstances. Gus would be her rock, helping her through her grief. I understand Felicity wanting Gus to do whatever his heart desires but I don't know whether she would be so stoic and objective in such a situation (loss of loved ones) so as to tell Gus to go back to the seas just then... Perhaps, Gus is already sailing when this thing happens. He returns to Avonlea soon as he receives the news, is there with Felicity and then after awhile she herself tells him to go back...

I actually forgot that Romney passes away. How sad! The reason I thought of Davey playing baseball was because in one episode ('The Trouble With Davey'?) he wins a baseball match (coached by Felix and Izzy) for Avonlea against Carmody. That's why I thought he perhaps really likes baseball and takes it up professionally! Cricket is a game I am (unfortunately) all too-familiar with! The game is an obsession for most Indians and is followed like a religion! Wherever the Brits ruled, they took cricket with them and Canada was no different. In India, the game has always enjoyed great popularity and is often mistaken for being the national sport of the country although it isn't! In Canada however, the game has all but sunk into oblivion. It is mostly played nowadays by immigrants especially those originating from the Indian subcontinent. Davey somehow seems to me more of a baseball player than a cricketer - I can't imagine him wearing all the cricket gear. Restless soul that he is, he'd probably find it too restricting! But certainly as a cricketer he would travel the world and would have unrivaled bragging rights in a place like Avonlea ;)

Since you mention having a knack for Hetty's character, does this mean you're writing fan-fiction currently? How's it coming along? Would love to read it! I can imagine how tough it must be to combine the books and the show. They're inseparable and at the same time different from each other. I would've loved for RTA to have had a Beverly. He was so likable. He seemed to be the only voice of reason in a bunch of high-strung, opinionated kids! Perhaps Joel Blake who played Andrew could've played Bev. I always liked the actor and was disappointed when they wrote him off.

I am in the middle of Season 7 currently. Just finished watching 'Secrets and Sacrifices' in which Aunt (Cr)abigail returns to settle in Avonlea and her presence on King Farm strains quite a few nerves! On top of it Janet thinks she has lost her wedding ring when it's actually been sent to the jewelers by Alec for sizing a new ring for Janet! It's a sweet episode and I've realized that I like episodes set on the King Farm or the White Sands Hotel more than I do others. I love the interiors of Alec and Janet's home and always wished I stayed in a house like that! I'll soon finish watching the whole series and will be at a complete loss as to what to do next! I've been watching it on and off for months now! Given my goldfish-like memory (Romney dies, really?!), I could do with watching the show from the beginning all over again but that'd be an overkill. Perhaps I'll take a break from watching RTA for the time being so that when I do decide to watch the show again (say 6 months later), I'll have forgotten what happens in the episodes completely! Even when I started watching the show again this time around, I knew and remembered how things culminate at the end of the series as a whole but ask me what happens in a particular episode and I'll be at a loss! So for me watching the show again was like watching it for the first time 'cos except for very few episodes whose endings I remembered, I never knew what was gonna happen in most of the episodes and how they were gonna turn out! Bad memory has its perks sometimes. It makes you feel as if you are experiencing something for the first time when it's probably the fourth!

There are some things about RTA that are always stuck in my mind too. I remember the first episode very well - how Sara first came to Avonlea and Felicity was so mean and jealous! 'Proof of the Pudding' is one of my favorite episodes! It brings back memories of similar fights I used to have with my sister and I can't help laughing so much that I tear up every time I watch that episode! Sara's attempts at striking a friendship with Jasper is what I also remember fondly. 'How Kissing was Discovered' was another classic and really cute episode! Then I remember that particular episode ('The Dinner'?) in which Felicity extends an invitation to Gus for dinner and he comes to the King Farm expecting the whole family and is extremely embarrassed to find only himself and Felicity there! That was so sweet and Felicity was really endearing in that one!

As I've mentioned before, I enjoyed almost all episodes in which the action took place inside the White Sands. That Hotel, inhabited as it was with quirky headstrong characters like Simon Tremayne and Pierre La Pierre with Hetty blustering about calling Simon "addlepated", was like the microcosm of Avonlea - a posh hotel, THE go-to place for almost everything that happened in the characters' lives, a halfway house - all rolled in one! So I remember quite a few episodes in which the Hotel was prominent especially this one particular episode in Season 7 when the hotel gets overbooked or something and Felix turns King Farm into a makeshift Hotel, really annoying Cecily in the process! 'Memento Mori' is one episode I remember quite well. It was quite a departure from the regular RTA episodes in its (justified) seriousness. In all the other episodes drama was always offset in one way or the other by comedy or romance but 'Memento Mori' was really grim... Then I remember the episodes in which Sarah Polley did a double role driving Hetty absolutely bonkers! I remember Peter Coyote's guest role as Romney. And Madeline Kahn and Faye Dunaway's guest roles. I saw 'Stranger in the Night' last month and Bruce Greenwood was amazing in it! I was surprised to read he actually won an award for guest starring in that RTA episode!

I loved the earlier seasons of RTA the best - the 1st and 2nd ones because I guess the kids are roughly the same age as those in the books and there was that innocence and camaraderie which was really special. I always wished there were more episodes which centered only and *only* around the kids - Felicity, Sara, Felix, Cecily, Andrew and Peter - and all the playful, whimsical and nonsensical things they invariably ended up doing! I wanted to see more of that... In the latter seasons I was a bit miffed that the focus shifted away from the Kings and certain episodes - like 'Davey and the Mermaid' for instance - just seemed a bit too contrived for me. But I can understand where the writers were coming from - three of the main characters move away from Avonlea - Gus, Felicity and Sara - and they had to be replaced by others...

Anyways, I'll send you a pm with my email id! Looking forward to reading whatever you've written :)

I always thought that Andrew WAS Beverly and the show just changed his name because it had become a girl's name.

reply

That could be the case... There isn't an Andrew in the books and Joel Blake's Andrew did seem a lot like Bev in the books! And there isn't a Dan in RTA who is as old as Felix. The Daniel who appears in the series stays a baby till the end... They did change a few things here and there but they did it so well that I have no complaints!

I just finished watching 'From Away' from Season 7 and realized to my shock that the kid who was starring as Brett McNulty was Ryan Gosling! I had never realized it before and had I not seen this episode again I'd have never known he guest-starred on Road to Avonlea! He's such a huge star now. I wonder whether he even remembers how it was like shooting for Avonlea and meeting "our" Hetty King, Rachel Lynde, Janet and the others!

reply

I miss Andrew so much! He was such a cute character and I wish he could have stayed. If Sara had stayed, I would have liked a romantic triangle between Peter/Sara/Arthur

reply

Wow i just read this entire thread. You both have such creative ideas and clearly love the series!

reply

bellz9113 - this might be a tad too late but I was just going through this thread that I started and read your message. I'm glad you liked reading the thread. Road to Avonlea has been a huge part of my life. It has, literally, willed and dared me to do things I otherwise wouldn't have. They just don't make shows like this any more... It's nice to know that there's a whole community of kindred spirits out there bound by their love for Montgomery's works and Sullivan's adaptations!

reply

It's interesting to me in retrospect, the romantic pairings for the character of Sara Stanley that could have been. Arthur Pettibone, now that I think about it, might have been intriguing. But due to Sarah Polley's decision to leave the series, well, that didn't give much space for a long-term love interest.

reply

I would have loved Sara and Arthur together! I like Arthur and wish he was used more too. I also like the idea of him having a love story of his own, instead of just being the loser in a triangle with Gus and Felicity. I also wish Sara had a long term love interest instead of just that brief romance with Booth. They would have been perfect for each other.

reply

Yes, Arthur deserved better. I really think that he and Sara could have worked as a couple.
