Funniest moment?

What's your funniest moment on One Foot in The Grave?

reply

I haven't seen the series that haven't been released on DVD yet for a very long time, so I'm only really going on the first 4 series, but it has to be:

"He's been in there for FIVE hours!!!"

Off The Secret of the Seven Sorcerers. Man, that made me laugh!

reply

the funniest has to be "The Trial" "WHAT IN THE NAME OF BLOODY HELL!!!" no one can rant like Richard Wilson can and still be funny

reply

[deleted]

A fine Eric Idle moment from Beast in the Cage.
Victor Meldrew! Victor Meldrew! He can stick it up his b-m.
Up his b-m!
He can bu--er off till kingdom come.

reply

Any time Victor says "OOooooooooooo.....GOD!"

reply

In series 6 when he unwraps his new wallpaper and it reads "Get a life you sad git", and his exclamation, "Will you look at this!"

reply

MARGARET: I just don't believe you sometimes! I gave you two bin liners, one for the dry cleaners, the other full of carpet cuttings for the tip. [she produces a coat hanger draped with various sizes of carpet pieces, wrapped in polythene]. Only you could get that wrong!

The one in series two where Victor is phoning the dry cleaners.

VICTOR: Well where the hell is she? I don't care if she is re-proofing a yashmak, I want to speak to her! Yes, last thursday...(to Margaret) Ususal performance, she takes my details, wanders off for half an hour, comes back, when did you bring them in, wanders off again, comes back, what colour were they? off she goes again...HELLO? Yes, I've got them here at home with me, I'm just wondering what the idea of this rather offensive note I've just found speared to the hook! "This garment was unusually badly soiled and bore stains of a resilient nature". What's it got to do with YOU? I bring my trousers in I expect them to be dry cleaned, not reviewed in print by the laundry critic of the Sunday Times!

I was in my room, asleep, all night. If you need corroboration, interrogate my pillow.

reply

Best moment ever.....

and the first show that I watched and got hooked ever since.....

was in HEARTS OF DARKNESS - Season 4 - when Victor and Mrs Warboys have their foots stuck in a bag of cement - which has turned solid from dripping water whilst in the back of a van.

This was the BEST EVER EPISODE that i've ever seen : the two ladies having the same dress, Victor hitting a bench and a glass of beer flying and hitting a guy; seeing a tomato sauce botton getting 'spiked' and it looking like someone has been stabbed..... and then the hospital scenes ... and scarecrow.

NO ... THIS IS THE ULTIMATE VICTOR EPISODE !!!

reply

I agree, unless it's the time Victor looks out to see a small car dumped in his skip, opens the door of it and an old mattress falls out.

reply

when victor goes outside to find a car in his skip with a busted mattress inside it,then shouts "you bastards"

reply

So many to choose from but I'll settle for Victor answering the telephone only to realise that he's picked up Patrick's daschund puppy.

"4291?- Where the bloody hell did you come from??! Bugger off!"

reply

Agreed!

reply

The scene where Victor is reading the notes made on a delivered cardboard box which says 'Meldrew's a turd'. He hits the roof until Margaret closes the box to reveal the full message 'Meldrew Saturday - to collect'. Classic timing and flawless scripting.

reply

There are so many really funny moments in the series but I think my favourite has to be when he is stuck in a traffic jam and puts on a tape and the car mechanics have recorded there own song on it with lyrics like' Victor Meldrew he can bugger off to kingdom come'. Victor's face is a picture listening to that and Mrs Warboys rounds it off perfectly by saying 'they hold a note very well for car mechanics'.

reply

no it has to be season 4 i think "warm champagne" when victor is asleep in bed with the old women he thinks is margaret. Margaret knocks on the door and victor thinks shes in bed with her. Ne way when they are both in the bedroom and the toilet flushes and you see the old women walking to bed GENIUS

POP QUIZ HOT SHOT

reply

nah the best one of all is when ronnie and mildred have pulled up in the car and margret tells victor to turn the lights off and hid his face is so funny when he says "oh my godfathers!" when he margret tells them there comin

the episode is called The Worst Horror of All (1992) its hilarious!

reply

"They never strike during daylight hours as you well know." hahaha.

reply

The old dear in the bed was funny.

"I come home to find my husband's taken up necrophilia!"

"Yes, he's actually planted it IN THE PAN! How anyone can be so utterly goofy...a mistake anyone could have made?!" and "I didn't catch his name, it might have been Frank Spencer!"

reply

How about when he finds the joke inside the craker in "The Man Who Blew Away"

"What's the difference between Victor Meldrew and a chef who keeps dropping his pancakes. ANSWER: They're both useless tossers.

It doesn't even work

If it said why is Victor Meldrew like a chef who keeps dropping his pancakes..."

:o)

My votes would go to...

"DRAMATIC FEVER" - when Victor goes to watch Margaret rehearse in the play and thinks the ensuing disasters are all part of it, chuckling along and eating M&Ms.

"THE WISDOM OF THE WITCH" - Victor drunk playing Backgammon and rolling the ice instead of the dice.

"THE EXECUTIONER'S SONG" - shaking the tomato ketchup ... everywhere.

But, let's be honest, there are far too many to choose from. There must be more brilliant "moments" in ONE FOOT... than any other sitcom.

reply

Some other good moments:

When the policemen show Margaret the photofit of Victor when he's arrested for being a prowler in "Monday Morning Will Be Fine".

In "Dreamland" Victor buying some second hand shoes (My Husband's just died) followed by the "Tramp" scene, which may wear you out laughing.

Victor poking the rice with a skewer to see if a mouse is inside it, & later having to rake grass clippings out of his carpet just as Patrick comes in the room in "The Broken Reflection".

reply

One of my favourites has to be when they're at the boarding house and some girl tell Victor the bathroom is 'full of midges'. So he barges in with the insect spray only to find room full of very unhappy midgets!
Also the time when Margaret is in hospital and Victor thinks she's dead is absoulutly priceless. Bloody machine!

reply

[deleted]

1. Plant in the toilet.

2. Picking up Patrick's dog thinking it was a phone.

3. When him,Margaret,Mrs Warboys and Mr Swainey are stuck in that boat in the middle of the stream, His shouting in that was hilarious.

4. Where he finds out his stolen car was found in Finland, His reaction to that was classic Victor.

5. His annoyance when his neighbours are having a party at 2am in the morning and he is trying to sleep.

That reminds me of when he was trying to set up the new Japanese-made answering machine/phone that gives instructions in Japanese at first (because the "Meldrew's a turd box" had the answering machine in it). Maybe I'm simple, but I always end up in stitches when the machine goes haywire and the electronic voice giving instructional prompts on how to set up the machine speeds up and starts repeating the same few words over and over, unintelligibly, at a ridiculous pitch that sounds like a demented Disney singalong. Victor and Margaret's facial expression as they exchange glances are priceless. "Your ID code--your ID code--your--ID-ID-ID-ID-ID..."

It could also be that I can relate to the experience of getting new products home and having trouble setting them up...

Later on, when the phone line goes dead, Margaret says the machine "committed harakiri"--which is ritual "honor" suicide in Japanese culture.

'Irregardless' is not a word

reply

I love the scene when they come back from holidays and Victor has to crawl out of the car because his feet are sunburnt.
Also, even though it's been mentioned a million times, the plant in the toilet is priceless.

reply

The episode when he is driving the cars around, after the last car gets crushed by the tank, and he gives the keys back, that is damn funny!

reply

The episode where Victors brother comes to stay: Alfred gets up from the table and pulls everything off due to him accidentally tucking the table cloth into his shirt instead of his napkin. Victor and Margarets horrified reaction is amazing!

The episode where Margaret is picking things out from a list of belongings her late Aunt has left. She chooses a 'cot, black and white in colour, one leg slightly damaged'. When a fully grown cow is delivered to the Meldrews they are puzzled but they then realise that it was actually a 'COW, black and white in colour, one leg slightly damaged'! Victor then sees that one of the cows legs is bandaged! His quote of 'What's ornamental basin a mis-print for, ORIENTAL BISON? is just brilliant.

The whole episode at the guest house is brilliant especially the set up with the midgets and also Victor spuergluing the glass to his head.

The episode where Mrs Warboys keeps trying to persuade Victor to adopt her friends dog, Nippy. Eventually he caves in and buys a collar, lead and bowl only to find out the dog was stuffed!

The episode where Victor was decribing the time friends came round and one lady's false eye fell out. Apparently she tried to put it back but grabbed something different prompting Victors line:

"How we ever managed to prise out that cherry tomato from her eye socket, I'll never know."

When the ambulance drivers deliver the old biddy from the hospital to the wrong address, being the Meldrews house, and put her into their bed! Margaret has gone out of the evening and Victor gets into the bed with eye patches on (due to the very bright street light that fell through the bedroom window earlier in the day) and doesn't realise the old biddy is not Margaret. Margaret arrives back home and rings the front door bell as Victor has locked the door. Victor answers the door and sees Margaret. The expression on his face priceless and he is speechless as he realises he has been in bed with someone else. They go upstairs and see the old biddy shuffling back from the bathroom and get bak into their bed. Again, the expressions on both Victor's and Margaret's faces nearly caused me to die! Margaret says something like,"You haven't been sleeping with THAT! My husband has taken up necrophilia!"
It has me in stitches every time!

Wow - sooo many, but the one that's stuck in my head for the past few weeks was actually not a OFITG moment at all, but when Richard Wilson guested on Father Ted as himself. Ted thought it would be clever to go up to Wilson and say "I don't believe it!", like no one ever did that. Wilson had had enough of that, and went absolutely nuts and beat the tar out of Ted, all while Dougal took photos. It happened again later in the episode ("The Mainland"); eventually Wilson appeared at the house, and upon seeng Ted, the man who'd pissed him off so much, he exclaimed, "I don't believe it!"

My personal favourite was the Yucca plant being planted in the toilet. Pure legendary.

That and As mentioned earlier, When Mrs Warboys tells margaret she thinks chris is having an affair and Victor Meldrew is listening to monty python on a tape laughing at all the wrong moments.

reply

i think the best episode was actually the one foot in the algarve special.
the funniest moment when they are asked to identify jean by her foot

reply

I like one that's very subtle and offbeat. Victor and Mrs Warboys have just been watching a mystery on TV. He asks: "And what was with that dwarf who kept running through the forest in slow motion?" Very Renwick.

Less subtly, there's the one where they're on holiday and Victor has found a dead bird in the toilet. "Ooh, it probably flew in the window and landed in there," surmises the landlady. "Well I didn't think it'd come out of somebody's bottom!" barks Victor.

Such a BRILLIANT series. Doubt we'll see anything quite like it for a long time.

reply

My best moment is in Return Of The Speckled Band - when Victor is talking to the dustman about his hat and the snake goes up the stairs - the conversation turns and Victor doesn't have a clue what the guy is on about.

reply

I just so want to watch this mystery show, and try to figure out the significance of the dwarf who kept running through the forest in slow motion! Alas, it will never be revealed. It's so hard to find the funniest moment in a show that is so filled with them!
So I'm just going to mention one , that I've just recently seen: In "the pit and the pendulum, quite at the beginning there are some awkward encounters between Victor and his next door neighbour Patrick.
Victor:" I think I can hear them talking next door. Where's that glass? They're talking about us. I just caught the *beep*( insert funny insult that got blanked out in my post; I honestly think it wasn't that bad, just funny and fitting , crucial in making the joke funny) think he's playing at"… It's all gone quiet, I wonder what's happening?" As we see Victor with a glass against the wall, the scene cuts to Patrickk, also leaning against the wall with a spaghetti jar between his ear and the wall, trying to listen as well!

reply

My hardest laugh is the scene where the old woman from the hospital is accidently dropped off at the Meldrew's, and placed into their bed by the ambulance attendants.Victor, unawares, gets into bed with her thinking it is Margaret, who comes home to see Richard in bed with this old woman. The ensuing bits had me on the floor! "Who's SHE?" asks an incredulous Margaret. "I thought it was YOU!" replies a shocked Victor. The old woman had been given a sedative, and was quite out of it, when Margaret gave her parting shot: " I see you've taken up necrophilia!!" Of course, Margaret strides over to the bed and pokes her soundly, and says, " WHO are YOU?!" At this point, the woman sits upright and begins screaming this hideous old-lady scream.

reply

Few of my favourites:

- When victor is laughing with headphones on as mrs warboys is telling margaret that she thinks her husband is having an affair.

- When victor gets that metal rod wrapped around his head in 'Dramatic Fever' by some guy he told off after littering, then has to answer his front door to the postman, who is trying not to laugh and victor says 'Dont even think about it!'

- When victor gets pen all over his face from chewing the end and not realising until he goes past the mirror.

Ah we all love a bit of Meldrew ;)

every scene with mrs warboys!!

reply

I forget which episode it is, but it's when they're watching the murder mystery, and Victor is on the whisky and smarties. Mrs Warboys says she believes that Basil was the murderer, because the victim had a sprig of basil in his hand when he was found, and Victor comments that it's "lucky he wasn't killed by Uncle Dick". He then sits there grinning to himself.

Also in "Beware the trickster on the roof", where he's totally paranoid that the TV aerial on the house across the road is grinning at him. Plus the bit with the cow. "What was 'China Basin' a misprint for, 'Chinese Bison'?"

Victor asks Pippa to take the dummy into the toilet because hes bursting, and she take him in for a pretend pee!!
When the old woman walks into the bedroom where Victor and Margaret are arguing, and the lamp is stuck in the window.
When Victor looks up and theres a pub sign on his front lawn saying 'The pain in the a*se'.
When Patrick hears a sneeze and lifts up the plant pot. Victor is there buried in the garden up to his head.

reply

The tree in the toilet - no matter how many times I see that it's still as fully a the first time. Brilliant.
