My wife and I were in a local shopping center this weekend when the first flakes came down in our area. As I was checking out at one store, just as a joke after the clerk said "Thanks for shopping with us", I said "Bon hiver." She looked at me stunned for a second, then smiled and said "Bon hiver!" back. We had a momentary laugh together. On the way to the car, my wife started interrogating me, "What was that about? Was she an old girlfriend or something? What does 'boney fair' mean? Is that some sort of code?" By the time I started the car I was laughing so hard I could hardly get my breath.

I really like the way the characters in 'First Snow' welcomed the first snowfall, even knowing what discomfort the cold weather might bring later. It's a good lesson about life to enjoy the passing moments that we can.

Seconding J-Street's sentiments. Up here in the hills of the NE Winter sets in early and stays long. It's not Alaska by any stretch but it can be a rough season. Approaching it with the right attitude can make a big difference.
Re "Bon Hiver": I spent some time looking for the origin of the expression but everything I found led back to NX, including an interview with a singer/songwriter who goes by that name. Anybody know?
I believe it's French for "good winter".
