It's easy to find on VHS (ebay has some copies) - not sure about DVD; I haven't found a DVD yet! (grrrrr)

I got mine on VHS from Ebay, quite cheaply. Definitely worth it. It's as good as you remember.

Hi..

I am fortunate enough to own a copy of the extremely rare original DVD release of Moondial!

I am as you were blown away by the original and its even better to watch as an adult. The reason the DVD is sooo rare is because it was withdrawn almost immediately after release because of a problem with the rights.

The VHS and DVD release are a highly edited version and not the full episodic version.

I have been in contact with a very nice lady at the BBC who is in charge of the Children Commisions. She has been looking into a release for me since the beginning of the year in its original broadcast. She informed me they looked into it again last year also.

Unfortunately we spoke today and all of my hope and dreams were destroyed when I heard thw words I dreaded to hear. The Children Commisions department have no future plans to release Moondial.......again because of a problem with the flippin rights!!!!!!

That lovely lady is now looking at alternative options for me and I will keep you posted.

Hope this information helps.

Thanks for the info, by saying edited so you mean theres a much longer version?

Its your turn Heather, no Heather its Heathers turn... Heather!!! ~ Heathers

Why does everything always resort to flippin' rights. It was good enough for the BBC to repeat but not good enough to grace us fans with a slice of our childhood? Eight years is a long time to wait!!

reply

Did the BBC repeat this?? If they did I missed it damn!! I think the BBC should release this again in its episodic version....if not start a new TV station called something like BBC GOLD and show all their old shows that the public want to re-visit from when they were young.

Will be setting up Moondial website soon with a petition toget it released and I am looking into buying the rights too!!!

reply

On ebay right now if you put in 'Moondial dvd' there is someone with 9 region 0 (region free) copies of this for £7.99 plus £2 P&P if anyone is interested. There are also 4 VHS copies a little bit cheaper

Good Luck

Please do not buy Moondial DVDs from this seller as they are selling illegal copies and ebay are looking into it now. I am currently looking into purchasing the rights myself from the BBC and this sort of action by the seller is causing concern. Also its not the full version. Please only buy the original VHS copies or original DVDs if you see one listed as they are extremely rare!

How are things going with regards to securing the rights yourself?

I'm sorry sundayboy-1, but i think you need to get off your high-horse.
When the only other option left to fans is to pay upwards of £20 for a battered old VHS or £50 plus for a copy of the rare DVD, it does not leave a lot of room for fans to find a way to watch this series.

I certainly can't afford £50 plus for a DVD and I'm not paying £20 plus for an old VHS that only has a few more runs in it.

As long as the person selling these copies is ACTUALLY selling what they state, the copies are good etc then I don't see anything wrong with it.

If the BBC won't get off their bums and release a real DVD for more than a few months before recalling it, then it leaves anyone who wants to buy this series in a binding situation.

I'd rather pay £8 for a good quailty knock off than £100 to a greedy seller!!!

reply

Yes!! I loved this too and was trying to buy it or download it with no success - any ideas most welcome as I've just been on Amazon and it is on DVD if you want to pay £100 for it????!! NOT! I didnt like it that much lol!

reply

I've actually had it now for ages

If anyone has it on DVD it would be great if they could torrent it for other fans as the BBC seems to have no intentions of EVER releasing it again and I'm certainly not paying between £50 - £100 for the DVD.
It is in a grey area because you can no longer purchase it and it is not shown on TV.

If I happen to find it cheaply I'll happily torrent it for everyone.

reply

This is a fair point. The BBC and other corporations critiscise pirating, but most often they are unwilling to prevent this happening by actually releasing the series' or films themselves.

I do not create pirate copies, but I have bought pirated goods before for the simple reason that I wanted to see a particular show, which the makers/ rights owners had no intention of releasing.

reply

Moondial is available free online to watch. Can't really state where because this post will be deleted but try searching harder.

reply

i bought a real copy of this on dvd. a magazine in the uk called readers digest released moondial and another classic bbc show called little lord fauntleroy in a 2 dvd box set. it's by no means a copy it's licensed by readers digest. only cost me £7.99

reply

Yeah me too. God bless Readers Digest for releasing Moondial, unedited on DVD! I'm enjoying it for the first time. I'd only ever known the book. Go to ebay and buy a legitimate copy!!

reply

I have to be honest and say I cheated.

Some lovely person uploaded all the episodes onto YouTube, I downloaded them and edited myself all the episodes to make one movie.

Was brilliant to watch it all again, however I'm sure that there wasw a scene in a church (possibly Christmas Eve) where she saw the children, but I may have had that confused with another BBc Childrens program.

I'll trade with anyone who has a jaccuzzi!!!!
