DVD

We need this on DVD! Or am I wrong?

i agree

I dunno, I loved this show when i was at school but i get the feeling that it would all seem horribly dated nowadays. Maybe it's best to let this one exist only in the hazy glow of nostalgia?

reply

I tend to disagree there, Gurn. I have a few episodes on VHS (the second series) and although some of the sketches, such as the one with Hannibal Lecter or John Major, do indicate a time and place, it is still enjoyable (like milky, milky). To make a point : Monty Python has stood the test of time (hmmm, those haircuts on the other hand) and that's as old as I am. So there must be room for MWE.

Actually I wasn't referring to the pop culture references, although that is a valid point, rather the general 'Right-on, student humour, early 90s vibe' that i found so daring and adult when i was 14, something that would cause me to reach for the remote nowadays. Eh...maybe i'm wrong tho.

my friend told me that the BBc had lost the master tapes for the show or something like that, so no hopes for a DVD

I too have DVD rips of both series, and they're still great!

Ah, peas! I'll 'ave some of them buggers!

reply

Don't think the BBC has lost the master tapes. I'm watching the clones right now. And it certainly hasn't dated at all

This series desperately needs a DVD release - it was cutting edge humour, brilliantly conceived. Who do we need to petition?

reply

I was a bit too young for this series when it first aired, but I got hold of a copy of a couple of episodes from the first series a few weeks back, some of its dated, but its still enjoyable

John Logie Baird: inventor of the TV and he only has one IMDB thread. Have some gratitude!

reply

lovedawn - I have the second series copied off of TV on an old VHS, I love this show very, very much and would like to get hold of some DVD rips fo the first and second series. Can you help me? My email is [email protected] can you HELP???? I'd even be prepared to pay for these DVD if necessary, please help another big fan! (shameless pulling on the heart strings there).

reply

I would love to see these released again. Alas, only YouTube provide grainy VHS rips.

reply

Aye, it's ridiculous that they haven't released a 90 minute 'best of' DVD at least with the sketches and characters that weren't topical. A lot of the material drew from the comedians' own personal stand up shows so that WILL have got old. But the fact that the History Today sketches are not currently available digitally (to my knowledge) is unbelievable.

I asked David Baddiel on twitter (@ronskanky) and he said Rob Newman was blocking the DVD release last time they thought about it.

He did sign the petition though - here -
