So much better than SVU

I've watched svu on and off for yearent but I am new to this one and I'm blown away by how much deeper this one is. I often have to rewind a few times to understand the legal point that they are making. LOVE IT.

I don't know how that typo happened on the word "years".

I just saw "In Vino Veritas" and I actually had to check the guest stars to be sure that it was actually Chevy Chase and not a much shorter brother. If you watch any of his old stuff he really towers over everyone but in this one he looked just a bit taller than average. I did know that people are getting taller but I didn't know it was that extreme.

And this was supposed to be a new topic but it has put it here and I don't know how to move it. I'm blaming the app cos I definitely pressed "new topic"

I agree about SVU; I always thought it should be Law & Order: Holier Than Thou.

reply

Oh agreed, Law And Order had actors who could act

Michael Moriarty would run rings around any SVU actor

I'm watching all the repeats I can of Law and Order. I'm still a fan of S.V.U but in comparison Law and Order certainly is the much better show. Acting alone puts it above svu. I could go on but we are in agreement anyway. Great show.

Many comments here that are right on the mark. The original L&O still holds its own even after all these years. In literally all instances, the first half of the show deals with the crime and investigation. Then followed by the legal issues and trial. This format, along with terrific story lines and equally outstanding acting, put this show in a class by itself.
SVU, with extremely dark story lines, is in most cases unwatchable. With this show, you miss out on the courtroom aspect that makes the original so compelling. There are way too many close ups of Benson and Stablers faces trying way too hard to look dismayed, angry, or concerned. Personally, after not watching SVU in quite some time, I recall my usual reaction after an episode was, "why did I just put myself through that?" Perhaps it's the combination of over the top dark story lines and mediocre acting that just don't do it for me.

Agreed; making them all omniscient was ridiculous! ;-/

Law and Order is better than SVU but SVU used to be a lot better. The series is different after Stabler left. Not bad exactly but not as gritty and it makes the stories vary heavily in quality. The personal drama of the detectives in SVU is lacking and Olivia is way too self-righteous. One of my biggest issues is how so many of the cases in SVU are solved in a neat bow where the detectives don't have enough hurdles and problems to solving the crimes.

Trusting someone...means relying on them and only the weak do that.

reply

This is really a better discussion for the SVU board, but Stabler leaving has nothing to do with SVU becoming a soap. Remember all the crappy episodes with Stabler's kids?

SVU was great in seasons 2-6 but the original L&O was always better.

reply

I hated the Stabler character. He was always mad, always wanted to beat everybody up. So unprofessional.

reply

Agreed, Stabler was a bad character. Unprofessional, hypocritical douche. His anger got really tiresome

I kind of feel the same way about the Sipowicz character on NYPD Blue. It is exhasting. I keep expecting him to have a stroke or a heart attack.

SVU is the Law & Order made for women. The lead heroine is a woman. She works for a division that only deals with crimes against women and children. The soap opera aspect of delving into all the back stories of the characters is on full display. (Unlike the original that was just about the case.) Mariska Hargitay's character was abused as a child so she makes it her mission to catch every suspect supposedly guilty of victimizing a woman or child. She was a sex abuse victim but she won't seek counseling. She can't have a healthy relationship. Instead she dedicates her life to catching sex criminals . . . So ridiculous !!!

I hate to be "offended", but I dislike your comment SO much. I'm a woman and I can't stand Law & Order: SVU. The original is way better, in so many ways. The cases on SVU turn my stomach and even more so after becoming a mother. I'm sick of Hargitay/Benson because the show is 97% about her and nobody else.

If this show makes it to 20 seasons and beyond, I'll be pissed. It's petty, but true.

Well, thank you webmiss for being a woman who appreciates quality when she sees it (the original Law & Order). And recognizes pandering when she sees it (Law & Order SVU).

This show will last a long time because unlike you, most women love the soap opera style of Law & Order SVU. But as a man, I hate it.

I don't hate it, but it has become predictable; in more ways than one! Nine times out of 10, we all know what's to occur; even the verdicts which aren't even close to real life! They constantly push "a surprise," but it becomes a joke each week we see a new episode!  

I hate it. I try to watch it every now and then. But I just can't make through one episode. I hate it.

But I can watch the original reruns over and over. That is quality TV. This SVU is garbage. Law & Order for women.

reply

SVU is certainly L&O for women, it least now. It isn't awful IMO, some episodes are awful, some episodes are decent, but the show is definitely overly soapy, focuses almost solely on Benson, who is very preachy and uses the show just to advance a feminist agenda now. It was good in seasons 2-7, then it became very soapy, with more focus on the cops personal lives than the cases, now it is very political with Benson lecturing to the audience.

L&O the mothership is timeless and I still watch the reruns regularly. Shouldn't have been canceled, season 20 was a great season and the show could've gone on longer.

reply

Thank you for agreeing. I can't make it through one episode. I rather not watch TV. If nothing else is on, I just turn the television off.

SVU is politically correct, emotionally assauging pandering.

SVU has always been the Benson sow, even when Stabler was around. LaO is so good because everyone on the team gets to be smart and they each work together and its written so that everyone gets to solve a case. SVU is Benson, Benson, Benson and its ridiculous. There are so many people on that show that are great characters but they all just stand around while she runs everything. The actress is unlikeable as well which really doesn't help. CI does have Goren but he collaborates with his partner so he can be tolerated.

reply

I hear you anbmom. You seem more familiar with this program than I am. Because as I said, I can't get through one whole episode. But it seems like you are saying Law & Order SVU is really the Mariska Hargitay show.

Another reason why I like the original better. It was about the case. Not any one character.

reply

While I agree that SVU has become the Olivia Benson Show since Stabler left, I don't think it was the Olivia Benson Show while Stabler was still there. Many episodes centered around his personal life - his divorce from Kathy and reunion with her, Stabler's kids were part of several episodes. And the other main characters such as Cragen, Munch, and Fin had their personal lives as main features in many episodes.

But it has been All Benson, All the Time after Stabler left and it has made the show worse over the years.

Which is exactly why SVU is not as good as the original Law & Order. The original was just about the case. Not about the characters.

And this is exactly why this SVU is the Law & Order made for women. Women like the personal back stories of the characters. Especially when there is trouble. Just like soap operas.
