Not just Richard. She was emotionally abusive to everyone. She's rude, condescending, judgmental and completely self absorbed.

Everyone has a bad day.

reply

Clearly she was. The entire point of the show was Ha ha Laugh at this terrible emotionally abusive person!

reply

Yes, but he was a fool to give in to her all the time. He could have stood up,to her, but I can only recall one occasion when he does that. She can't entirely be blamed for being domineering when everyone just gives in to her all the time.

reply

Not sure she's abusive, she's just bossy and domineering.

She says something like "Mind the cyclist, Richard!" instead of "Damn it Richard, can't you see that BLEEP cyclist over there? You never pay attention to your surroundings, you BLEEP idiot!"

reply

She wasn't actively hostile to him or anyone, so in that respect I would say no. On the other hand, she does tick all the boxes for Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Perhaps, in keeping with the floral theme, she should have been called Narcissus, except that it's a masculine name and doesn't roll off the tongue as Hyacinth, Violet, Rose, and Daisy do.

reply

There is a feminine version of the name, Narcissa. I don't think she was hostile to anyone either. She calls everybody 'dear.' She's quite kindly really.

reply

Believe me, I have known abusive women, and Hyacinth is not one of them! She's annoying and bossy yes, but it has an undercurrent of kindness to it.

'Monsters? We're British!'
