It is not a spin-off, sorry, it is a one-off prequel to Keeping Up Appearances showing Hyacinth as a young woman along with her family. It is to commemorate 60 years of BBC comedy and includes one-offs of Are You Being Served? Porridge and Til Death Us Do Part. From the clips I have seen the young woman who plays Hyacinth has got her down to a t.

The Long Walk stops every year, just once.

Oh, this would be very fun! I'd love to see this. Are there clips somewhere of the young Hyacinth in character? I'd love to see!

Trust me you don't want to see this. It was terrible.

reply

Oh I'd still really like to see it! Curiosity has got hold of me. I'm such a fan of Hyacinth Bucket and I'm a fan of the series. Like any remake or sequel I'm not hoping for the best, but I'd still like to see what was done.

So it's been aired already? And you've been able to see it? How many episodes?

It worked quite well in it's way. It was a 30 minute episode so had little to do except give us a few ideas of the characters and how they become how they later did, this mostly obviously focused on Hyacinth and Kerry Howard absolutely channelled Patricia Routledge, she doesn't just steal the show (as she was the star she couldn't really) she absolutely brings young Hyacinth to life and shows us glimpses of what Hyacinth will become and what she really comes from.

Her biggest skills was the way she brings snippets of a West Midlands accent in along with learning how to take in an RP style.

Rose was very pretty and Daisy was interesting though probably the least like the character of the future.
Not really sure Mark Addy was correctly cast as Daddy though in size etc especially.
Violet was mostly a blank space from the original programme.

Obviously Emmet, Liz Richard and co do not appear, however Hyacinth has a boyfriend of sorts, called WIlliam.

Like I say not much plot really but still clever enough and as I say a outstanding performance from KH.

This sounds fun! Where and when did you watch it? Do you know if it's available on youtube? I'll have to check it out. Is it still called KUA or does it go by another name?

It reminds me of when I watched the "reboot" of Are You Being Served, where it was supposed to take place in 1988 where the last episode left off (but with a brand new cast, obviously, but still playing the same characters). I admit I cringed somewhat with the reproductions because I've been spoiled with the original cast. But some of the cast members were so miscast that it made some scenes difficult to watch.

I'm kind of gathering that perhaps this version of KUA is probably pretty similar in that regard. But, being a long-time fan, I'd still really like to see what they came up with!

I finally just saw it. Oh dear me, it was simply dreadful! While there were some general Hyacinth mannerisms that got channeled through, the rest seemed totally off the wall. Dreadful. Perhaps I'm spoiled given I'm already so familiar with KUA, but Young Hyacinth was horrible to watch.

I also think they miscast Mark Addy as Daddy and missed the mark entirely on that one. While young Hyacinth stays true to form in how she chooses to perceive everything through her upper class glasses, the entire special seemed off-putting to me. I kept waiting for it to pick up and make sense.

Missed the mark, that.
