Still great even after 17 years....

.....I dusted off my old VHS of HOC this weekend, in honor of Sir Ian, and happily found this series to be as relevant and just as wickedly funny as I remembered it! A great political satire that I'm sure will stand the test of time as will Richardson's brilliant performance.

Cool. Can't help myself from pointing out though that Ian Richardson was never knighted. But, if you want to think of him as Sir Ian that's cool.

reply

He was appointed a CBE in 1989.
Although that doesn't entitle you to be called "Sir", as previously mentioned...

LOL. Sorry guys, I thought I'd read he'd been knighted. Bad me.

reply

I thought he had been, as well.

Certainly deserved to have been.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

I think it always demeans a person whose success is already marked by public acclaim, such as an actor, for them to cheapen themselves by then accepting a political honour such as a C.B.E., or knighthood, or worse, a peerage.

reply

Really? Why do you see it as demeaning or cheapening, Stranger?

"Really? Why do you see it as demeaning or cheapening, Stranger?"

Because public acclaim measured perhaps, by commercial success is sufficient and because the so called honours system is seriously tainted and often nomination comes as a consequence of preference rather than acknowledgement of particular qualities.

Let's face it, anyone can buy a knighthood or whatever they are.
How many Americans have been knighted by the Queen? Steven Spielberg for heaven's sake, what has he doe for England?

Not quite, anyone perhaps, but almost anyone.

pagangazarii seems to have taken point well, thanks for the affirmation!

reply

Us Americans tend to call all famous old British people "Sir".

I recently purchased HOC on DVD and started watching this past weekend. It is brilliant so, yes, after 24 years it is still very much worth watching. Amazing how very apropros of current events the series is and interesting that 24 years later Charles is still not King of England! (Nor will be for at least another 10 years.)
