Why didn't Uncle Phil just get remarried?

It was strange because the two Vivian's were so different. The first one was brash, outspoken and dark skin, and the second one was light-skin and had a softer personality. You would never know they were supposed to be the same person. They should've had the first Vivian either die or they had gotten a divorce and then Uncle Phil marries the second one.

Those were different actors?!

I always assumed that Aunt Viv just suffered from depression halfway through the series, and that she got that skin disease that Michael Jackson had.

Never assume

I liked the first one much better. But she ran a foul of WIll Smith and befouled, so they tossed her can!

Divorce wouldn’t have fit. From all accounts in earlier seasons, they had a good marriage, and the show (like Cosby and Family Matters) hinged on it’s portrayal of a non-broken black family. Plus, Will’s mother specifically send him there for that sort of stable household, so a divorce would have ruined the basic premise of the show.

Now having Aunt Viv die? They would have needed some explanation, which would have been too heavy for the show imo. And then they would have needed shows regarding Uncle Phil dating another woman and then remarrying. And that would have taken too much time. It would have given too much attention to Uncle Phil and his remarriage when the show needed to stay on Will.
