One season 1 episode that doesn't fit in

On episode 7 of season 1 - "The New Approach" - Gus brings in somebody to psychoanalyse all the staff and suggest improvements for them. Throughout the episode, it seems as if all the staff hate George. They all complain about him and beat a dummy that resembles. Are there any other episodes where any of the staff hate George? I've not seen them all, but it seems to me that George is not hated in any of the other episodes.

I don't think any of the staff hated George, more that they pitied him as the series went on. I suppose it was only Gus who I think actually did hate George.

However in that particular episode it was set up early on that George had some conflict with certain people that made them stressed. As editor, he had to make the decision to refuse to allow Sally to do other publicity and Damien to curb his gratuitous news techniques while he didn't know that Alex's toyboy relationship would be used by Gus to confront her. As I recall, Henry and Dave had other things in mind.

There are other episodes where George has inadvertantly ruined other people's plans -

Off the top of my head
- Unable to testify that Sally is nice in the libel trial
- Shooting Henry in the eye with the paintball gun so he was subsequently fired from presenting a documentary

Also, there's the episode where, after breaking up with Nina he becomes a tyrant and upsets everybody.

But the way everyone cheered him in the last episode when he stood up for himself showed that he was still held with a lot of affection.

I agree with the OP! In this episode, everyone seemed to actively hate George and want rid of him.

In every other episode (and even moreso as the show went on) everyone pitied George, and liked having him in charge purely so they could take advantage of his increasing ineptitude. Seeing them hate him so much in this episode (especially if you watch it back to back with, say, a series 6 ep) is very odd indeed.

I tihnk it's odd given this episode that the person who Gus sees most consistently as a "mate" is George (and I think for his part, George tries to reciprocate out of pity).
