Future Dvd's?

Season's 1 and 2 have been out on DVD. Anyone know when seasons 3 and beyond will be released on DVD?

Every other topic on the board if you look down the list asks the same thing. For my money, if they were going to release the rest of them they would have done so by now.

I'd be delighted to be proven wrong though...

Please allow me to delight you. The Love Boat, Season 1, Volumes one and two, and Season 2, Volumes one and two, have been out on DVD for many years. Most believed as you do, that the other five seasons would never see the light of day. Then it was announced on TVShowsOnDVD.com recently that The Love Boat, Season 3, Volumes one and two, will be released on January 17, and can be pre-ordered now from Amazon.com. If sales are good, more seasons will probably follow.

So there is more hope for Dream On than you may have thought. I would buy it. More importantly, now that I know about it (I didn't have HBO in 1990) I plan to go to TVShowsOnDVD.com and vote for it. If you would like to increase its chances of being released, you will do the same.

Unfortunately, there hasn't been anything new in ages.

I tried emailing universal about it, but didn't get a reply. Most of my favorite episodes came later like "the odd ball" and "oral ses, lies, and videotape" guest starring Tom Poston as uncle Bouncy. I really hope they continue to release them, but I'm starting to lose hop.

reply

I just sent an e-mail to Universal. Maybe if enough of us ask, they will get the ball rolling.

I just sent my email to Universal with the suggestion on a "Complete Series DVD Release". Sales probably weren't what they hoped they would be w/ seasons 1&2, so maybe they could release the entire series in one shot.

reply

So if nothing new has been posted in ages, why is it a great page to watch?

reply

Because if there was anything in the universe to post, it would be there. The site is the absolute very best resource to track such things. Because of them, I was recently alerted to a show due out later this year that I had signed up to receive updates on about two years ago. No other site has any info on it yet, but they have the press release and cover mock-up. You can assume with 99.9% certainty that no-news-on-TVShowsOnDVD.com-is-no-news-at-all. Just sign up, add Dream On to your e-mail alerts, and forget it. If there's anything to tell, they'll tell you.

wow, what a rousing endorsement...do you run it or something?

Nope, check it out for yourself. Have a good week.

tabaddon, you are soooo correct about TVShowsOnDVD.com. They are an excellent source on getting the scoop on DVD releases way before anyone else. I visit their every day and have also been set up to get alerts on shows i am interested in.

Amen, sista/brutha. Building the 'want' list there can be addictive.

My understanding is that additional DVDs haven't been released due to the agreements that must be obtained in order to show the television clips from his flashbacks. The rights to these shows are owned by several different studios and the negotiations can take forever. It's a miracle that the got the first two seasons released.

reply

Yeah, that issue holds up a lot of shows getting released. At least in their original form. Usually, it is due to rights to the music in the episodes, but in Dream On's case you have all those old clips. Still, I can't see how that would be that difficult. Clips like the ones they used are not in high demand and aren't likely to be the sticking point in my opinion.

reply

The show was produced by Universal Studios. All clips aired in the show were from the Universal library. Getting clearance for these clips is not an issue at all as Universal owns every single clip ever played. You do not need clearance to use something you already own.

No other seasons have been released on dvd simply because there isn't a demand. Season 1&2 didn't sell well so it's not worth the expense of manufacturing and promoting others that won't sell.

reply

You're right for the most part. However, not ALL of the clips used were part of the Universal library. Remember the first episode and the footage of the boxer getting his face bashed in? That was from an episode of "The Twilight Zone", and not owned by Universal. I was glad they were able to still use that in the DVD release, as it wouldn't have worked as well without it obviously.

Have you ever been watching some old black and white show or movie and stumbled on one of the clips used in "Dream On"? I did on the "Leave it to Beaver" Season One DVD set when watching the original unaired pilot. The clip of Richard Deacon saying on the telephone "Friday's show" was used in a "Dream On" episode. It was cool. It seems like there was something else I was watching on DTV one time that had something in it I recognized as a "Dream On" clip, but I can't remember now what it was.

Man, I sure wish there would be more DVD's of this great show! If only the first set hadn't been somewhat expensive and had better distribution, it might have sold better. I bought it the very first day it was released, but I guess not a lot of people did. Too bad.

For anyone in the UK - the 2nd season is finally coming out the end of April so just maybe they will continue to release the future seasons! (Please). I did manage to get hold of the last season but the quality is awful and I recorded a lot off ITV2 a year or two ago but I really want the originals.

Don't worry, beer has plenty of hops.

Didn't sell well? I don't know about that, but what I do know is that anybody that is selling the Season 1/2 box set, they are going for nothing less than $30. IMO, that is pretty high for a TV show that was only 30 minutes (or less) per episode.

HBO has a streaming service, doesnt it?
Why not play them there if they dont want to manufacture DVD's?

So the same reason American Dreams has never been released is the same reason this hasn't: expensive royalties.

Or does it have to do with the word Dream in the title?
