Ahead of it's time...

To me this is one of the best gameshows that has ever been, and even in 1990 it was quite ahead of it's time. (Fort Boyard?? Seeyaa...)
I've just this minute finished watching a repeat of an episode on Callenge. It's from the first season where if they didn't collect 100 gold but got between 50 and 100 they got the 'not so fabulous numero-uno prizes!' The team in Question collected 10 crystals and collected 128 gold in total.
And the best thing is Richard O'Brien hopping around like a five year old in a sweet shop, the least said about Tudor-Pole the better. (What ever happened to him?)

I liked Ed Tudor Pole, but I basically agree with what you're saying. This show really was a true classic, and it should be resurrected or at least released on DVD...

"Nasty French planet, filled with shifty, back-stabbing, croissant-sniffing, nitwits!!!"

reply

Fort Boyard, the frence version came first and Crystal Maze was channel 4 copy of it.

reply

But lets face it- the insanity and mania of the Crystal maze was just SO much better than the overblown pomp Fort Boyard...

reply

I much prefer the crystal maze to fort boyard. Watching Leslie Grantham and Melinda Messenger acting was just painful. I've always thought Leslie was a pervert.

reply

I remember Richard saying in interview that the original intention was to hire
Fort Boyard but it was in use when they had to do the filming so they were
forced to start from scratch. He added as a footnote, "And came up with the
better show, I think". D'accord!

reply

Yep, brings back a lot of memories. Loved it as a kid, and still loving it even being 20. It was good like that, everyone of any age could like it.

Would love to see it return, and replace the dribble thats called Big Brother and Love Island. Being 64 now, Richard O'Brien I think is too old to do a new series, maybe have him come back for one special episode and have someone a bit younger take over. I'd personlly like to see Robert Llewellyn or Christopher Eccleston to be the presenter. Those two have what it takes to make a new Crystal Maze another smash.

reply

Yeah, but Christopher Ecclestone would only do one series in case he got
typecast. Well he wouldn't want us to think he can't only play miserable
Northern git, would he?

But with you that the space used for the Big Brootha Owse could be far better
used with a Crystal Maze set instead.

Anyone else shout at the tv when watching it?

Especially at that girl who managed to build the radar screen, but didnt understand why her team mates were screaming "turn around"...
