Oooh, you're so lucky!!! I really hope I will be able to get my hands on a complete Sherlock Holmes DVD collection of the Jeremy Brett series one day...in The Netherlands we only have the Adventures series out on DVD...

Today is even better - we've had an entire Holmes day on ITV3 - I didn't record it but have found excuses to be in the kitchen all day to watch it on my TV there, lol. (Cooking has been hard to concentrate on, bearing in mind that I consider Jeremy Brett to be the sexiest man ever on the planet - and certainly the best Holmes.) For those to want to record it, I'm sure that these will come up again, as ITV 2 & 3 seem to consist pretty much entirely of repeats of old series.

I don't have ITV3... *weeps silently in a corner of the room*

Very well put. I totally agree.

If you don't have ITV3, then you've got plenty of time to go and read Jeremy's tribute site, if you haven't already done so, 'The Brettish Empire' - http://www.brettish.com/ - and you can also visit the Brett 'trading post', where people swop recordings of TV episodes etc. - http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/thebrettianexchange/ - you might even find a copy of The Last Vampyre there. (If you're feeling flush, Amazon are doing the whole Sherlock Holmes set on DVD for a low £83.99 - or only £56.17 from their Marketplace Sellers - I just bought a set myself at that price!)

I just watched the bit of The Last Vampyre that I taped. I only missed the first half hour, so it was not all that difficult to pick up the storyline... I loved it, Jeremy was brilliant as always! I have got to get my hands on those DVDs soon!

The best bit of the episode was Holmes turning around with the fangs in and scaring Watson to death! it had me chuckling for a good 10 minutes-those fangs were awesome

I thought Brett played the vampire really well-he was always dresses in a shiney tux with top hat, had the pale face, the slicked back dark hair. Holmes even wore a cape in alot of the episodes, even one with a stand up collar! Brett or Holmes may have made an entertaining Vampire!

Watson:The Borgia Pearl is inside that?
Holmes:If it isn't i shall retire to Sussex and keep bees!

Must re-watch this episode...good scene...

Brett actually played Dracula on stage, incidentally.

I am sorry to dissapoint you but there is no such holmes story as the last vampyre, there is however a story called the Sussex vampire, which the Brett story the last vampyre is losely based. the Sussex vampire has nothing to do with vampires or dracula, unlike the last vampyre which was total rubbish and an insult to the genius of Conan Doyle.

reply

Afraid I have to agree with you, the Sussex vampire is a very short story, 8 pages long, theboy didn't die, Ray Marsden wasn't in it, between figuring out what had happened and fixing it was half a page

reply

I agree with the previous 2 posters. Of the 3 extended versions of short stories that they made (to make up for leaving out 2 of the long stories), "The Master Blackmailer" is good but I find this one and "The Eligible Bachelor" tiresome and silly.

I thought that Jeremy Brett looked vampire-like in 'The Last Vampyre.' He sadly did look pale in some of those later episodes. But those close ups of him with his white face and dark red lips, in this episode particularly, did put me in mind of Dracula.
