When the hell did heart become an element?

Seriously?

RIP Apollo

Since 1990 when the program first aired.

It's nicer this way, don't you agree? Five planeteers is better than four and I like having Ma-Ti. He is very useful sometimes and he is the soul of Captain Planet.

I always liked this character. It seems fitting that the one who represents heart is the youngest and therefore the most innocent and pure of heart.

reply

But..it's not an element. They just got lazy and decided to ad..heart.

RIP Apollo

Nor are earth, fire, wind and water. Are you saying that the ancient Greeks were lazy scientists and philosphers and they decided to make those things elements?

Earth are minerals, fire is energy, wind is a force of nature, and water is a compound molecule.

You are only right to say that heart is not one of the classic Greek elements from ancient history.

I love the new element of heart!

reply

Considering the philosophical concept of soul and the now-pseudo-scientific concept of vitalism in organic chemistry I would say heart is an element more worthy than earth, fire, wind and water. I always saw it as the element of life.

That is some deep stuff right there.

Of course, Ted Turner is practically a philosopher.

Well, they could have gone with lightning (aka = electricity) but that would have been too obvious. So they went with heart, or what is supposed to be love because love is a power all its own.
They probably went with five powers because the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had the whole "Team of Four" thing going and they wanted to be different so they added a fifth. I really don't know. I'm just guessing, but it sorta worked from a marketing standpoint.

Not quite. Actually the ancient Greeks (which is where we get the classic Elements from) believed there were indeed five elements, not four.

The first four are an early version of what we now know about the states of matter.

Earth - solid
Water - liquid
Air/wind - gas
Fire - plasma

But as I said the ancient Greeks believed there were five elements. They believed everything that existed was made up of the first four and the fifth element (please no jokes about a certain movie) known as ether, also known as quintessence, akasha or spirit, was believed to be the unifying force that held the other four together.

The reason ether is so often ignored/forgotten is because unlike the others, it is believed to be an invisible, intangible force that doesn't have a distinct form or characteristics of its own.

That essentially is Ma-Ti's job in the series. He may not have the ability to affect the physical world like the others do because his element is an intangible force, but his power is the most important because it unites the others.

Really, the only thing the show's makers did "wrong" was calling it "Heart" instead of Spirit/Ether etc.

reply

Hmm. Heart does seem a bit generic, and cheesey, but if the alternatives are Spirit and Ether I can see why they went with Heart. It just ... feels better than saying "spirit" or "ether".
