DVD with commentary

My DVD of this movie doesn't have a commentary or any interviews. I understand that some do - would that be DVDs issued in 2002? - or only those in Region 1?

Can anyone help?

Now, why would they want to do that? I thought our lovely Prime Minister said that that Region 1 is our ally. So, why did the guy in Comet go all strange when I wanted to buy a multi-region DVD player? Why should there be 2 regions? I am told that my multi-region DVD player (£34.99 including p & p from amazon.co.uk) will eventually stop being able to switch between regions just to suit the manufacturers of the DVDs and their silly copyright laws and not because of the technology itself!!!!!!!!!!!!

The guy said I would be better off with 2 separate players, one for Region 1 and one for Region 2.

Someone else said that the problem doesn't exist with multi-region (as opposed to m-r compatible players, but why should the question even arise?

I mean, why should we be penalised for wanting to see something that nobody bothered to release in Region 2??????????????

I wonder about that too. Australia & N.Zealand are Region 4 but they appear to be compatible with Region 2. Some DVDs show 0 as the region and can be played, apparently, on any DVD player.

Before I bought my player I was told at Dixon's that there was just one which played Region 1 & 2 but that it was unreliable - that changing from region to region could cause problems. Someone in a rental store told me that there is a code that can be fed into a Region 2 player in order to play Region 1 disks but that if the player goes wrong the manufacturers will refuse to repair it if they find the code has been put in it.

I agree it's a pain. When I wanted 'Shadow of Fear' I could only have bought Region 1 but got a second-hand Region 2 copy through Amazon, so someone MUST have produced Region 2 copies but you don't find them for sale on play.com or Amazon.

Odd, isn't it - does anyone out there know the answer?

I bought Shadow of Fear ex-rental from Blockbuster, so maybe they only brought out Region 2 DVDs for the rental market but not the selling market? I think it was the same with the VHS of Secretary. I bought mine from Blockbuster but I remember reading an interview with Spader that marked the debut of the DVD, no mention of VHS at all!

Sometimes I have thought Amazon didn't have copies of something but they turned up in amazon.co.uk z-shops. I have no idea how z-shops differ from amazon.co.uk marketplace.

I bought my DVD player from amazon, but couldn't work out how to ask them about changing the setting. The makers insisted none of their stuff was in any way multi-region compatible. They stuck to that story till I threatened to make a big fuss with Trading Standards as I said they clearly knew amazon was selling it as multi-region compatible. I said the alternative was for them to just discreetly tell me which buttons to press ... and they did.

I think I had already messed up the guarantee simply by not realising till 2 late that the disc goes into a little tray. Using it like a VCR or post box cost me a copy of Alien Hunter - still missing in action within the player!!!!!!!

re your DVD player - it's interesting that the makers insisted none of their stuff was in any way multi-region compatible when they obviously know that it is. There's obviously something going on here because it would seem that all DVD players could be multi-region compatible. If you can buy Region 1 DVDs in the UK then why not the machines to play them on?

Someone must know the answer to this.

My friend Diana, who does not own a TV, said something like:

"We are are their allies when it comes to fighting their wars with them, but that does not mean they want us playing our horrible germy DVDs on their whizzy machines."

The serious answer is that it is all about capitalism and who owns the rights to the copyright in which part of the world. It's not about the machines being too primitive to cope.

Its the same with changing the regions on a DVD player in your computer - you can only change it 5 times before it gets stuck at the last region you changed it to - the only way of changing it back would be by rebooting the computer.

with multi region DVD players with a limit i think the limit is much higher - but they are right a lot of the time it is easier just to have two players - i know that isn't good news.

i suppose the good news is that Region 0 do not change the current region setting on a DVD player.

Two players - not a great prospect, but I suppose I could afford another if mine got stuck on a particular region. I just hope it gets stuck on 1, if it gets stuck at all, then I can buy a region 2 DVD recorder.
