In The Middle

I did not love this movie. But I also did not hate this movie. My best guess is in 1989 this might of been ground breaking. Yet it's nowhere near Akira.

You didn't love this movie? Wow!!! This is my favourite manga movie ever!!! Sure, Akira is well shot etc, etc, but how can you beat the storyline and craziness of ideas that Wicked City has? How can you not fall in love with the spider woman? She's one of the best half human / half creature characters that I've ever seen! Sheer brilliance!

reply

The spider woman tripped me out. The story was a little to crazy for me. But not a bad anime over all.

This anime is my favorite of all time. I liked the story, good action. The old man was great. I couldn't stand akira. I don't see what all the fuss is about that movie.

Although laging in some spots, (corny music scenes) this movie had some obvious subject matter that I had never seen in a movie. Aside from that spider woman, there was that scene with that other woman, I need not mention.

Akira on the other hand, consisted of a guy running around with a headache for the entire film, until he finaly expanded into some sort of muscle tissue mass which was probably the only good part of the film, but needless to say, lacked direction. I just didn't get it. Wicked City was way better. And if you want good story without violence, check, "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind."

Akira is one of the best sci-fi animes ever created, and wicked city is, well, on the borderline of being a hentai... I would advice EVERYONE who has not seen it to SAY AWAY! A true shame to the genre... I don't see what the director thought he was doing.

Not great, but certainly not bad. Wicked City (AKA Supernatural Beast City) was a decent effort put out by the Japanese. Of course, extremely few animes can compare with Akira so I won't even go there. The animation for Wicked City was pretty good, but the women were kinda creepy looking, and not sexy at all. Believe it or not, the whole concept of the Black Guards reminded me of Men In Black (right down to the suits and ties and big ass guns).

I liked Wicked City. My boyfriend is a recent film graduate and introduced me to the world of anime 4 yrs ago. I'm really diggin' anime now.
Oh, what's sad is that I still have yet to see Akira lol.

reply

You must see Akira. Its a Anime law. Just kidding. Akira was one of the first anime's I had ever seen. Apple Seed (1988) version was another one of my fav's. But Wicked City just seemed gross to me. Just my take on it.

Is this the movie where a demonic woman has sharp teeth in her hoo hoo? I never got to finish it, and I would like to know how the movie ends.
edit. I don't mean tell me the ending I just need confirmation on the title so I can buy it and finish it myself.
"And I, Jack, the Pumpkin King,"

Yep, this is the movie with that demon woman. Enjoy!

Thank you!

It surprised me, actually. I had expected a mindless sex and slaughter film, but the story was not half bad at all, and the characters were cooler than I had expected, especially the old geezer. Pleasant surprise.

On the Akira issue, I simply found it an awesome movie with a few minor flaws which I could easily forgive it for. It was certainly more than a movie about a guy walking around with a headache.

Yup, same here. At one point i thought they were gonna sex that chick (main character... Makia or smthing?) to death, which would've been a bit strange... otherwise it wasn't as gory/mindless sex as i thought it would be.

I am afraid I am stuck on the fence myself. It wasn't great, by any stretch of the imagination (But I enjoyed Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis over Akira, personally), and it seemed rather rushed, but I kind of liked it.

A very good reviewer had said, "No Good Movie is too long and no bad movie is short enough", and oddly enough, everything in the middle was actually what I did not like about this movie (It felt kind of cheesy, and a lot of it, I wanted to drop off as mindless junk, but isn't that what a lot of movies are?).

I really wanted this to go on, perhaps if the movie dropped a lot of the sex scenes and such and worked a little bit more on the story, I would be willing to give it something higher than a 7 out of 10.
