Underrated?

I really like this film. I recently bought it on DVD. Sure, it's heavily flawed, and at times it borders on soft core pornography. But I just think it's such a fun film, and a real staple and perfect example of 80's Anime. Reminds me very much of the other films from the time like Goku Midnight Eye, Golgo, etc.

It also owes a nod to John Carpenter's The Thing. The demon at the start with the head walking on the tentacles, is almost a replica of the scene from The Thing. At least design wise.

Regardless, a great Anime flick, one of my favorites. What does everyone else think?

WICKED CITY is the best!

Well, maybe not technically - there are others more impressive in terms of color palette and animation.

But something about the combo of anime, sci-fi, and film noir gives this a kick that few movies have.

I am not a big anime fan or anything but I love and own AKIRA and NINJA SCROLL. I am also a huge horror/sci-fi film fan. Im a just trying to decide if I should buy this film or not??

Did you enjoy it?

Imo one of the best anime out there.

The ultra violence and lust are a great contrast to the simple story of love against hate.

Like Avatar a story needs not to be complicated if it works.

I wanted to watch this after hearing that Kawajiri thought this, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (his masterpiece) & Ninja Scroll were his votes for best works he has ever done. I watched Ninja Scroll first, It was a good little weird fantasy film. Wicked City, I enjoyed more. I thought the stylistic animation and the rather action oriented story was good enough for an 80 minute film.

Goth for LIFE!

To me the funky monster sex brings it down quite a few pegs, not sure what's up with the Japanese and that kinda stuff.

Cut out all of that nasty sex stuff this movie was really cool.

I would say this is one of the coolest movies I have ever seen.

When I first watched it circa 1996, I didn't enjoy it much, thought it was vapid and dumb. All I knew was that it was from the same guy who made Ninja Scroll and I guess my expectations were too high (which sounds dumb to me now... as if NS was some kind of piece of high art.) Finally re-watched it for the first time yesterday, and I enjoyed it a lot more. It so obviously was a major inspiration on a bunch of movies and video games I've loved in the ensuing years.
