'Child, I'm too OLD for surprises!'

Um, what?!
Why was Mattie so old-looking? She was a teenager when gave birth to Basil!

Flash-forward Basil to adulthood. He was, what, 25 to 30 years old at most?!

The oldest Mattie could possibly be would be 46 years old! She looked 70.

Good point. I never thought about that. Although I don't think Mattie was a teenager. I always believed she was in her early to mid 20's but come to think of it, she could have been older than that. I remember a line in the movie where her father tells her "I should have let you marry that (Whatever the guys name was) boy that you were once sweet on". So for her to have once considered marriage, she was probably a bit older than a teen. I know back then, some women stayed home with their parents until they were married, especially country women so she could have been in her 30's.  IDK, it's a possibility. That would make her around 60 at the most and 60 yr olds back then, where not like 60 yr olds today.

I think she was around 20. I believe in the book she was somewhere in that realm, 19 or 20.

I remember her father in the film, after beating her, crying out "I had such hopes for that girl!"
That would imply she was quite young, likely under 25 at least.
