Mattie's Horrible Son Basil

Mattie sacrificed and gave that boy everything. Spoiled him rotten in the process. In one swoop she loses everything because of her. He never even comes to look up his mother. Maybe someone who read the book can tell us what happened to Basil!

It might have been genetics for him to turn out the way he did. His father (Butch Fuller, who got Mattie pregnant) was a slickster so it might have been passed down to Basil. Yeah he was horrible, he reminds me somewhat of my brother. Being spoiled as a child then grows up and gets into trouble and always wants mama (and daddy) to bail him out of everything. I read "the women of brewster place" and they don't say anything else about Basil just like in the movie. I heard the book "The Men of Brewster Place", Basil comes to Brewster Place looking for his mother Mattie and he has children and left his wife or something. I have to read the book (men of Brewster Place) to figure out what happened with him.

I agree, he was a vile man. While his choices were his own, I also blame Mattie.
She spoiled that kid rotten, she never disciplined him.
Basil acted like it was everyone's fault but his that he landed in jail!
I NEVER would risk my home for my son. Especially if I knew he had a temperament like Basil's, and Mattie KNEW.
And I'm just not that trusting, of anyone.
Plus, he made his bed so lay in it.

[spoilers for The Men of Brewster Place ahead] In the book, Basil does come back eventually. He works double shifts and double jobs, anything he can get, to save up money to pay his mom back. But when he arrives in Brewster, its way too late. Mattie has passed on. Basil tries to 'save' 2 kids, kids of his girlfriend's sister. But that fails too, ultimately, again because of his past catching up with him (the police find him who have a bench warrant for his skipping out on his prison sentence years ago.)
The book also tells why Gene is the way he is too. That's quite a story.
After that, the book kinda goes downhill.

Wow thanks for the update. Please tell us what happened to Gene. Sounds like they should of made a movie about them too.

Gene is actually gay! I can't recall exactly what happens to him, but I do know he has a crush on his boss at work!
As odd as a development this is, I almost am NOT surprised at this. The character of Gene seemed a little effeminate in the TV series, there was something odd about him.

As many times as I had seen this movie I had never seen it from the beginning by the time I caught it, she had already been living in Brewster Place. BET has been playing it like crazy and I had a chance to watch it from the start. I just wanted her to let his ass rot in jail. The way he talked to her and almost like he blamed her for ending up there. Left me dumbfounded.

The apple didn't fall too far from the tree....
Basil is his father's son...Butch was no better...
which is the reason Mattie's father didn't want him within spitting distance of her.

I came here to post exactly this! She practically worshipped the boy to point of it being unhealthy. Why in the heck did she put up her house if there was not even a guarantee that he was going to be found innocent?
What's even worse is that I think he was a bit emotionally manipulative. The last day he dropped her off at work he ran on and on about how he would not be able to survive in prison, while Mattie chose to remain optimistic. Then he has the nerve to ultimately tell her to have a nice day.....wtf?

How can the woman have a nice day after you done filled her mind u with all those negative thoughts?

Well, whether he was found innocent doesn't really matter. The house was basically collateral on his bail to assure that he didn't do exactly what he did, skip town and not show up in court for his trail so the only thing he had to do was show up and she would have been able to keep her house.

I woke up this way...

YEAH BASIL WAS SO SPOILED THAT HE EVEN THOUGHT HIS MOM SHOULD PAY FOR HIS LIFESTYLE AND FOR HIS WRONG DOING. HAD TO BE FOR HIM TO BE ABLE TO BE TO LET HIS MOMMA PUT UP HER HOME FOR HIM AND STILL SKIP OUT ON HER... THAT DEFLY WAS BUTCH FULLER JR. FOR SURE BUT AT LEAST BUTCH KNEW WHO AND WHAT HE WAS, NEVER DENYING IT. BUT I BELIEVE BUTCH TOOK ADVANTAGE OF MATTIE BC SHE WAS GULLABLE AND CRUSHING ON BUTCH "THAT PRETTY RED THANG" then TURN AROUND AND THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENS WITH HER SON BASIL, BUT INSTEAD OF CRUSHING SHE LET ANOTHER "RED THANG" MINIPULATE HER INTO DOING WHAT THEY WANTED TO DO. INCIDENTLY PAYING FOR SOMEONE ELSE'S MISTAKES ONCE AGAIN. NOW I NEED THE MEN OF BREWSTER PLACE BOOK SO I CAN TELL AT BASIL AND GENE ALL OVER AGAIN...LOL
