In the beginning of the film, we are led to believe that Jimmy has complex mental issues due to the death of his twin sister. He is essentially mute and without warning takes off and begins traveling to California for an unknown reason.
In the end, it's revealed Jimmy's issues are much simpler. His lunchbox has pictures of the two of them together, what looked like one of her baby shoes and artwork. I don't think there was really anything else in there nor did their need to be.
Jimmy's only desire was to leave the final memories of his sister in a place where she was happy aka the dinosaur park in Cabazon, California. He has now finally put his sister to rest and presumably can move on.
While perhaps not the intent, I got from those scenes that while the adults (Bateman and Christine) were chasing down complex therapy, group homes, etc. to help Jimmy the reality of what he needed was right in front of their faces and much more simplistic. Corey as a child was the one who truly understood Jimmy so he was able to unlock that.
actually the Bateman's could have been successful had they hired competent child psychologists. Corey's approach aint better 'cause kids understand kids better, it was actually more risky and I understand how immature, since he was just a kiddo, if it succeeded is because of sheer luck... It was a wild goosechase, it was "he wants to go to California? let's see what is so good about California", without even considering how impossible it be for the two to sweep over all California and how difficult is for them to get there (impossible on their current funds)
