Wish this movie was made in about 1982

It would be cool if hey had made a film like this during what I call the Golden Age of video games. Like where they would be playing Defender, Missile Command, Tempest, Pac-Man, Galaga - games like that.

In other words, true arcade coin-op classics instead of home console games.

You're not the only one calling it the Golden Age of video games. I don't really agree, but I can't argue with how cool it is; Tempest and Pac-Man especially are rad, and I agree that it would be sweet with a movie about that era and that kind of gaming. But this movie was basically a full-length Nintendo commercial, so it's not like it could have been something else. And as someone who holds the NES as the best console ever made, I find it to be quite wonderful.

I'd take one of each, I suppose...

Sad story. You got a smoke?

You know, as big as both arcade and home video games were in the early 80s (before the big video game crash), I'm surprised that there weren't more strictly video game related movies. There's a pretty detailed thread on this board about movies where games are featured in some way or another, but there weren't many where games or gaming culture were the main focus. There was Tron obviously. And The Last Starfighter, where a game was a plot device. Oddly enough, the most game-centric movie might've been the R-rated T&A comedy Joysticks.

Golden age of arcade games, maybe.

Perhaps a spiritual so-and-so every few years.

1977, a pinball movie as a local tough guy tries to win back his reputation by regaining his high score at the local pinball arcade

1982, a sort of highschool melodrama involving videogame arcades

1989, the wizard

1995, a family christmas drama about the art of the super nintendo

1999, a supernatural thriller involving the breast toucher of the '89 film centered on 3D gaming

2014, a romantic drama about mobile gaming (title: 'Mobile Love')

2019, a buddy cop roadtrip about the advancement of then-current gaming

I would call it the silver age. I believe the release of the NES marks the turn of the golden age.
