Not a sequel to 'Witchboard'

What's up with that warning on the video box? Is this to avoid lawsuits or something?

Just because this has the same director, I wouldn't assume it was a sequel. Of course, it also has the tagline, "This time, it's not a game," which makes it sound sequel-esque.

Not really to avoid a lawsuit /this film came out in 1989 ,so the video comany (MAGNUM) wanted to make sure that people don't run out and rent this film(thinking it was a sequel to Witchboard ( as im sure you know a sequel to ''WITCHBOARD '' did come out but not till 1993

Thaks for the reply. It's kind of confusing because it has almost the same title and similar typography for the "W" in "Witchtrap"/"Witchboard," plus of course the same director. So it's like they wanted to associate this film with "Witchboard," but then break the association to make it stand on its own.

Anyway, I think "Witchboard" was much better, but I didn't really care for either film.

No, actually, Magnum DID want people to run out and rent this film thinking it was a sequel to Witchboard. Witchboard was a big hit on video, and Magnum knew that Witchtrap would likely be right next to it on video store shelves. They deliberately designed the cover of Witchtrap to look very similar to that of Witchboard in the hope that people would assume they were part of a series. Magnum included the disclaimer to cover their ass in case the distributor of Witchboard tried to sue them.
