The Bear Clock scenes, where were they shot?

My wife and I were riding in the Smoky Mountains many years ago and came upon the the sight where they filmed the Bear Clock scenes along a creek. The clock was still standing minus the workings of course but I have long forgotten exactly where we were at. The other thread mentioned Plumtree, NC. Does anyone know if this is where the remains of the Bear Clock are located or is that where the store scenes were shot? We'd like to take our sons to see it. Thanks

I was on the set of the movie and it was filmed in Banner Elk, North Carolina. That's all I can remember, but it was a really cool little place. I'd like to go back there someday myself.

Yes the clock is still there in Plumtree , NC. The store burnt down a few years ago, but you are right is was next to a river. Plumtree is about 10 miles from Spruce Pine, NC. If you get on 19E in Spruce pine just keep going toward Avery County and keep to the main road you will go across a big white bridge and the area will be on the left. They still take care of the place really well.

Thanks Melissa,
My wife and I were just talking about riding up to the mountains for the day and we might just go by there. I just checked now to see if anyone had replied to my question. I knew that it wasn't in Banner Elk.
Thanks again!

Would you happen to know where the bridge that is shown at the start of the movie is located?

Thanks

Well I finally did find where the clock used to stand, across the road from a church in some little community in the NC mountains. The clock tower is now gone. I spoke to several people in the area and they said it started leaning and figured it would be safer to take it down. I believe the place was called Plumtree.

So where did the clock tower, if you'll excuse the expression, wind up after they took it down? Did they move it inside, or destroy it?

reply

As much as I remember the people said it was destroyed. It was beyond saving.

That's too bad. But I'm glad you're still around after all these years!
