WHY ISN'T THIS FILM ON DVD?

THIS IS THE MOVIE I LOVE THE MOST AND IT MAKES ME WONDER THAT WITH TWO SUCH FINE ACTORS IN IT, THAT SO FEW PEOPLE HAVE SEEN IT AND THAT IT HASN'T HAD A DVD RELEASE WHEN SO MUCH TRASH IS BEING RELEASED AT THE MOMENT!!

It is mine all time favorite movie, too. I've seen it on a number of occasions, and will definitely watch it again. I think that you just answered your own question:
only few people have seen it, so Paramount might not consider releasing on DVD something that might financially sink.

Here is another side to the story as well:
The movie was made in The Netherlands. By the time of its original release, the dutch distributors completely blew the home box office because of the lack of investments in the movie. And that slone made the movie a catastrophy despite a beautifully written script, wonderful actors and an amazing directoral work of Otakar Votocek.

American viewers were lucky enough to see this picture at all. But, quite frankly, I have given up my hopes to see it on a DVD.

Ironically, the sad fate of this little gem is reminiscent of the movie's main theme, ie something which is used to be great yesterday is forgotten tomorrow.

There are a lot of Colin Firth fans around the world who are desperate for copies of his films. Putting any film of his on dvd would generate sales. Especially as the picture quality would be reatly improved.

There was also Ernest Hamingway (the guy who was shooting dishes), also the Lindberg's kid. Keep in mind that this movie has a lot of allegories and fictional "celebrities". It is a movie after all. However, at least one character in my opinion is based on a real person. I am talking about that crazy poet (Zlatogorski) who wanted to escape. May be it is an accident, but I tend to think that the authors did it on purpose. Even his features are similar to one of Vladimir Mayakovsky, a Soviet era poet who commited suicide (supposedly, killed) in 1930. If I am wrong, I need a proof of that!
