missing scene

I used to have a copy of this film that my parents recorded from television. There was a scene in it, where Harry Crumb goes down to the wine cellar, and Annie Potts character tries to seduce him. after she leaves, he accidentally destroys the entire wine collection. I bought the film on dvd, and I've seen the VHS release, and this scene isn't in either of them. But, in the scene directly after where it would've been, you can see the wine stains at the bottom of his pant leg as he enters the kitchen.

I've heard of films being cut short for TV, but never expanded... Any idea why this would be? Or where I could find a copy with this scene included?

Thanks for sharing! Interesting! I watched that scene again and indeed the bottom of his pants are wet and reddish in the scene where they all are having dinner at the table and touching each other with feet under that table.
So, what's in that wine cellar scene, what exactly is happening there, could you describe it in more detail? Thanks!

This actually isn't uncommon. When movies are edited to fit television timing they are usually cut down, but depending on the length of the scenes cut (or even the movie itself) it doesn't fit with the standard times used by networks when figuring in time for advertising. The solution is to put a scene that was cut back into the film for the edit.

Another (more well known) instance is in The Goonies. There is a scene where the kids have to fight off a giant octopus either directly before or after the pirate ship scene when they're in the water. One of them even mentions the octopus to the parents at the end even though it's nowhere in the movie... unless you're watching the television edit which includes the scene.

The big question is - is anyone preserving all of these extra TV scenes?

A lot of these movies come out on DVD and they do not include the TV scenes even as extras. The Jerk is one example. I don't understand why the studios wouldn't at least put these on the DVD release. I guess over time these will be lost.

Aiplane was released in the Don't Call Me Shirley edition with the tv scenes placed in with the original film version combined. Mallrats likewise has an alternative cut which was the original cut that has a lot of the previous tv only scenes. I wonder if they care enough to ever put these back into Crumb, it was a funny scene in an often despised film that I love so much. Maybe if it has a bluray it will at least show up as a deleted scene.

Yes, I have seen this scene as well. Crumb goes down to the wine cellar and breaks all of the wine bottles by shooting off a cork or something if I remember correctly. The wine rises up a couple feet and soaks his pants. I have not seen this scene in years. It is not on the DVD.

As a wise man once said, "Wherever you go, there you are."

This also happens in the original naked gun movie, when on television you see the scen where his umpire chest protector gets shot and deflates, but it's no where to be found on the DVD version of the film.... I always remembered the octopus part too from goonies.

I watched this movie last night for the girst time in years and do not remember that scene you are talking about. Sorry.

Does anyone know if there are additional scenes in any of the foreign DVD releases? There's one in particular recently released by Umbrella in Australia which lists a running time of 98 minutes: http://www.umbrellaent.com.au/p-3265-whos-harry-crumb.aspx

The U.S. DVD is supposedly 90 minutes, so that would be a pretty big difference if it's true.

reply

I emailed Umbrella (the distributor of the Australian DVD) asking about the running time. They were kind enough to check the movie for me and reply. The 98 minute running time is just a typo. The running time of the Australian DVD is 90 minutes, like the US. No extra footage.

If you do a Google Image search for "Who's Harry Crumb?", you'll come across some production still which clearly show Crumb in costumes that were not featured in either version of the movie. In one, a production still shot by an L.A. based photographer, he's wearing a jester costume of some sort. In another, he's in a fountain between two frog sculptures. I don't remember either of those scenes so they must not have made it into the movie.

Interesting.

I don't win a lot.

I wish this scene was on youtube. Cluckabunga, what happened to your copy?

Yes, very true that they put that scene on the TV version. They also had a scene where Nikki explained to Harry that Tim the butler is explained to have been like a cousin or something, which explains how he gets away with being snarky at his employers.
