How is that an ending???????

How can they end the film like that???

First of all, what happens when the real monks show up? Or when the church finds out (one way or the other) his real identity. Penn is a goner. Second, the film ends just before De Niro admits who he really is to Demi. So why the #### should we "conclude" that she loved the idea to run away with a wanted fellon, when he does? How can you simply stop to follow a story and then call that an ending?

reply

I am all for open endings and own conclusions, but not when there are too many loose ends in the plot itself, like here. In other words, too many "unfinished businesses" when the credits appeared, and it doesn't look as if they were holding out for a sequel either. Therefore, agreed.

I think the suggestion (from earlier in the film) is that Mary (the mother of Jesus) is now looking out for them and giving them some spiritual assistance. All will be OK, if they stick to the straight and narrow.

... should we "conclude" that she loved the idea to run away with a wanted felon ...
I really don't think she cares. She just wants someone to help her and her kid. She says this a number of times through the film. Ned ends up being "Johnny on the Spot".🐭

I did wonder about the first two questions you asked.

As to the third, Ned likes the Demi character, and she's no angel, either. They seem to fit together well. Plus, he saved her child. That one I think pretty much takes care of itself.

But I do think Spookyrat1's idea does cover a lot of territory. Plus, at least in the movies, religious orders tend to be very tolerant and protective of people who they feel deserve a second chance.
