Worst accent ever?

So, I finally found a faked accent worse than Keanu Reeves in Bram
Stoker's Dracula or Kevin Costner in Thirteen Days.

Dreadful. What the heck was that supposed to be, anyway? British? And I
usually like Cage, but this was embarrassing.

reply

It's supposed to be a stab at Americans who put on a European continental accent to appear educated or sophisticated or something. It's in the audio commentary on the dvd... I think that you missed the point completely!

reply

Whatever it was supposed to be, it was hard to listen to. I was just watching this on tv, and I was wondering what they were thinking.

reply

The accent isn't hard to understand or anything, maybe it's because I got used to all kinds of accents at different call centers I worked in but... come on, it was quite understandable.

Ummm Dumbo... I mean Carlos, she didn't mean it was hard to understand, she meant it was annoying to listen to, which it was. Cage did such a bad accent, it wasn't funny or amusing.

Dana, it wasn't hard to listen to at all. Hearing him talk made me laugh, and that's what they were going for!

reply

I perfectly understand what he says and english isn't even my native language.

It doesn't matter what the point is, if the point misses it's mark. Cage's attempt was ridiculously bad, not funny.

Definitely agree, just saw the movie for the first time on Amazon Prime and came here specifically to talk about his accent. It was some attempt at a "Wall Street-yuppie-socialite" style and it was terrible, like the movie overall.

reply

Of course it could be argued that it's the word accent ever, but really, it's completely intentional, and therefore, at least to me, it doesn't count.

damn, you people are pretty closed minded! can't you open your mind up a little? i loved the accent he did in that movie, and it seems i'm the only one who does? lol

i think it matches his eccentric charactor and its quite humorous also, but Cage always puts something odd in his charactors like if you recall how he did that other eccentric accent in Peggy Sue Got Married? in an interview he said the only reason he was able to pull that accent off was because his uncle Francis Ford Coppolla directed Peggy Sue, but otherwise big picture companies would'nt let him do that, but thats what i love about Cage, he is so eccentric and open-minded and does whatever the hell he wants!

it makes the movie funny, for example when he is running down the street yelling "i'm a vampire!, i'm a vampire!, i'm a vampire!, i'm a vampire!" it is hilarious how it sounds with that accent. also how he just says his name in the accent "hello, i'm Peter Loew"

why would you want him to have a "perfect" accent anyway? i think his charactor would be too plain if he did, but thats just my opinion.

but keep in mind i am a big fan of this movie so this is just how i feel about it, but i can easily see how someone could find his accent annoying, but to me its kind of funny and odd and matches how weird he is in the film.

reply

The other night I watched a dubbed version of this movie. Now I'm intrigued to know whether Cage's character has the fake accent right away, or whether he develops the weird accent as a result of having been bitten by the vampire. Thanks for your replies!

His acccent kinda sounds to me like the comic store owner on The Simpsons. As for the acccent supppoedly being an "intentional" parody or critique, that doesn't justify how absolutely retarded it sounds. But it somehow improves the film, which has nothing going for it except its utter retardedness. It's truly a love-hate relationship for me

reply

"But it somehow improves the film, which has nothing going for it except its utter retardedness"

Exactly. That "utter retardedness" is why I love this film. Though I acknowledge its not exactly serious art. I think of it as a guilty pleasure. It is laugh out loud hilarious at times. At least to the twisted among us such as myself. I think the accent adds to the funniness of the film.

reply

He was born and raised in Long Beach California, duh!

reply

his accent is amazing. it's intentional, and it works perfect for the sheer wackiness of the movie. it makes me laugh just thinking about it. and the movie is actually quite brilliant - so all you people who can't grasp what's going on here, why even post a comment? only makes you sound stupid.

closest movie this reminds me of is george romero's martin. which is a great film, though it has a totally different tone than vampire's kiss. and i'm sure none of you have seen it.

reply

How can his accent be amazing, it's not even a real accent, it's just Nicolas Cage sounding stupid in another movie. I was wondering though, maybe you or someone else could enlighten me on what makes the movie brilliant, because I watched it and I couldn't grasp anything brilliant about it.

reply

I know it's not a real accent, I know he made it up, that's why it's so much fun. His character thinks it makes him sound smarter, and only makes him sound like a pompous ass - and that's exactly what his character was. The movie itself is brilliant for it's sheer absurdity. It's totally over the top, Cage completely checks out by the end (talking to a wall), and the scene when he's yelling at Alva and his eyes go wide and he looks totally crazy just cracks me right up.

Question: How did you react to Johnny Depp's accent in Fear and Loathing?

reply

Bonesmuggler81,

Oh I get it now. He made up the accent, which makes it fun. Maybe I didn't pay attention to the movie enough, but I don't remember it revealing that Cage's character was speaking that way to sound smart. The idea of a duck being president is sheer absurdity as well. This movie was a failure, it's not even terrible in the train wreck sense, it's just terrible.

Answer: Johnny Depp was actually trying to talk like Hunter S. Thompson, who sounds a bit like that. I'm not sure if you knew this but the movie was based on a book.

It's that kind of narrow minded thinking that's going to keep qualified ducks out of the white house.

ugh. boneshow, boneshow, boneshow...

i hate it when people say something is "brilliant" and has something "going on" but never begin to articulate what that actually is. yea, we get it, the movie was a satire, blah blah blah. just because something has a point doesn't mean it was well expressed, or even worth expressing. these arrogant responses on imdb are all the more silly for their utter vagueness, and suggest a kind of vapidity and disguised ignorance on the part of the poster; hence the defensiveness. arrogance is only justifiable when it's backed up by a vocal intelligence or good taste, but both are pretty lacking here

p.s. a retort actually says something, it doesn't just purport to say something. share your thoughts a little maybe

wow, you really put me in my place. if i'm the "h0m0sexual", why are you the one analyzing a turd of a book like American Psycho as if it were a thoughtful, layered piece of work. i mean, how "g@y" is that. it's all pretty obvious, "m0r0n"

reply

[deleted]

i didn't even analyze it, genius.

reply

[deleted]

Yea, it's a movie I vaguely remember seeing as a kid; we all peruse the pages of bad movies on imdb, it's not a crime you little virgin. And a short description in the title of a post is hardly a "critique" or "analysis". How does enjoying stop-motion or animatronic pupppets make me a retard exactly? That stuff's cool. I guess you're too grown-up and hardcore, huh. I bet you stare into your snot-covered bathroom mirror at night wishing you were Patrick Bateman, you little cgi-lovin' nambypamby.

P.S.: if you call someone a retard using botched grammar, it doesn't really work too well. Might wanna hit the edit button.

Believe it or not it's a real word. There's nothing wrong with having a decent vocabulary. As far as "taking my comments too much to heart," well, maybe, I just hate pricks like you who have no business giving me flack for my opinions.

reply

[deleted]

My "decent vocabulary" comment was referring to the fact that you found a word you didn't know to be foolish; it was a completely seperate criticism from the grammatical one. Simple minded of you for lumping the two together and thinking so broadly (vocabulary and grammar are two completely different things). And grammatical mistakes are fine, everyone makes them, but the fact that you have a big one in the same sentence in which you call someone an idiot doesn't bode too well for you. And all of this wasn't in response to a "simple criticism", it was in response to calling me "g@y" or "f@ggot" or whatever brilliant name you called me regarding my response to some other bonehead user. Which is ironic, because I was pointing out how dumb it was that he criticize someone without actually articulating what it was he found worth critiquing (a real criticism, no matter how "simple," analyzes SOMETHING in a critical manner). I couldn't think of a better inidicator of simple mindedness than feeling content with that kind of shallow, purely reactive dialogue. Have a nice life, pinhead.

I thought the character deliberately faked the accent to try to sound more intellectual. And given that he was insane, the accent being weird sounds fitting.

reply

Exactly. People seem to dismiss this idea because the movie never explicit states that the character pretends to have an accent to appear sophisticated but these same sorts of people prefer their cinema spoonfed so can you really blame them?

Seriously though, this movie was basically a WAY better and more hilarious version of AMERICAN PSYCHO and it predates it by 11 years!! It was even made before the damn book. It's an over-the-top character study on a yuppie losing his grip on reality and going insane circa 1980s. This was one of the funniest movies I've ever seen and the performance by Nic Cage my all time favorite performance! That lame-a$$ overrated Christian Bale's got NOTHING on Cage here.

reply

so true, not only worst accent, WORST FILM he was in, and pretty bad period

reply

:( c'mon, you really think it was the WORST film Nic Cage did? The WORST? Seriously? What about... Ghost Rider, Bangkok Dangerous remake, Kiss of Death remake, Next, Gone in Sixty Seconds remake, Wicker Man remake, or Family Man??

reply

...Con Air, The Rock, Snake Eyes...

reply

Well it made me laugh, and I guessed correctly that it was intended to be part of the comedy.
