Different take on this movie now?

I thought it was an allegory for emotionless sexual relationships and "bleeding" people to fulfill one's sexual urges. I've always assumed that all of his encounters with women are symbolic. Do most people now think it's a straight up movie about a guy going mad? I'm going to have to watch this one again now that it's back on.
