Buck IS s slob...but he also is a caring uncle too !!

John Candy is wonderful in this role. he is portrayed as a total slob---without a whole lot of "tact", at least at first. But he ALSO comes across as truly caring for his nephew and nieces too. Were he really a low-life...he would have gone to the track anyway, and not worried about the children. Instead...he talks his possibly ex-girlfriend into watching the other two children...while he goes out looking for Tia, knowing she may be in over her head...with "bug"...and he ALSO teaches Bug a good lesson too.
