Why couldn't Buck wear his hat to the party?

Hi , in the scene where Buck is talking about the party to the parents at the lights they say he shouldn't wear his hat to the party? What was the problem with it?

I think it resembled a Russian hat.
Trouble with Russians was a bigger deal around 1988.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

He wore a different hat to the party, not the Russian furry number. My guess was because he was older, they'd tear him a new one for trying to fit in. One of the lads there even pinches it off his nut if I remember correctly.

"A lot of people hate this hat. It angers a lot of people, just the sight of it."

That's a line from early in the movie. The first time I watched the movie on television and saw that hat, I broke my hand punching the screen. True story.

You are kidding right?

what's with the berets at the party? lots of guys wearing them; all those people seemed to have the same style (clothes, hat, hair). which is the idea?

It is in our idleness, in our dreams, that the submerged truth sometimes comes to the top.

Having been a teenager in the '80's I can say that fashion like that was very much en vogue at the time. If you look back, for example, at how groups like The Culture Club, Kajagoogoo, Wham!, and many others dressed there was a very heavy emphasis on long coats, spiked hair, hats (yes, berets were not uncommon) and a tendency towards what I would almost call cross-dressing among a certain set. Most of us dressed in jeans and T-Shirts, with the occasional Member's Only jacket, but people like this did exist, much as the Goth look became more common in the early 00's.

I just saw it as an inside running joke.
