That one shot where she's sitting in the movie theater, crying...then a few seconds in you realize she's watching a Marx Brothers movie...

It floored me. It's the most emotionally naked Kaurismäki's ever been in one of his films; in a way it's the defining moment of his entire approach.

Was anybody else amazed by this one moment?

Wow I never noticed that. The way the moment was filmed reminded me a lot of the shot of of Anna Karina crying while watching Joan of Arc in Vivre Sa Vie. Anybody else reminded of that?

Was I completely wrong in thinking this was a way to show her getting very emotional to illustrate the fact she was pregnant? At this point in the film, her pregnancy hadn't been revealed.
