Australian References ?

I noticed that an Australian rugby league game is heard on the stepfathers radio, Iris asks for a beer, the first song at the dance while never mentioning the place mentions surf sand lifestyle clearly Australia, a bottle of wine sits at the dinner table maybe it was an Australian bottle same with the navel orange.
Does anyone know the reasoning behind these references to Australia and were there any others I have not mentioned ?....
