Kaurismäki and music

I love the way Kaurismäki's films are randomly infused with interesting songs. His films are often bleak, but just when things are at their bleakest point, up pops a cool song (most often sung by a popular Finnish singer), either in a bar, inside a store, on a jukebox, or playing on someone's radio or stereo, etc. Love how he incorporates music in his movies!

I was coming here to say just that. I just finished the Proletariate Trilogy, and while I definitely noticed and loved the soundtracks of Shadows in Paradise and Ariel, it wasn't until about halfway through Match Factory Girl that I thought, "Kaurismaki is just freaking brilliant with music." He's just got such a great ear and such a visionary way of knowing exactly when to use exactly what song.
