Because the party (i.e., the fun, the celebration, the DISTRACTION) is over. Nothing's really changed. They are in love, hence the romantic feelings at the wedding and reception, but are still young and stupid. It's a picture of how a lot of young married couples are. I know a couple who got in a huge fight at their reception because the husband wanted to go to the limo and watch football.
Why do you both need such a linear, literal interpretation? And why do you need to kow "what happens next?"
