What do you think happened after they got back to Earth?

At the end when they return to Earth 12 thousand years in the future, and the sign lights up, "Welcome Back" what do you think the Earth was like when they got there? I'm in the middle of Gunbuster 2 right now, so is that the civilization that exists 12 thousand years in the future?

It kind of looks like in some ways Earth stagnated and lost a lot of technology only to rediscover it again later.
So by the time they get back everybody knows about the Gunbuster 1 and its crew, thanks to Nono.
