IIRC, this was the one Hakala brother who was a medic. Did he survive or die?

The medic wasnt ¨Jussi Hakala¨... Actually, his on screen name was Juho Pernaa, nicknamed "jussi". And his fate, nothing is said about it.

If I remember right, he survived. I have read the book.

If I remember correctly, in the book the third Hakala brother got killed in Continuation War by friendly fire. They were defending hill or something like that and some finnish soldiers thought that they were russians so they attacked. But the medic in the movie wasn't Hakala...

He got a belly hit and while he is being horse-carted over a lake, artillery starts pounding the lake. The movie leaves this open to question, in the book he survived.
