Missing Scenes for American DVD?

I saw this film in parts a while before I bought it and I'm sure it was the original cut because it was in Finnish without subtitles and I had no idea what was going on besides knowledge of the conflict. I later ordered the DVD and now own a copy with English subs and I distinctly remember a few scenes that aren't in my copy.

Such as Ylli by a river carving a bird out of wood. Then later when he dies I think they place the finished bird with all the fine details on his body or coffin. On my DVD you see him hacking at a slab of wood here and there and then later he gets hit by shrapnel in the woods and that's the last you hear of him.

Another scene is where Martti is running through that same wooded area I believe and there's artillery going off all around him but the scene is devoid of sound (from being deafened or possibly just for draumatic effect), similar to the end during the final barrage of the war, and he goes over and through craters and logs and stuff.

There are probably other scenes that are missing that I can't recall. Has anyone else noticed this? Why would they take these scenes out, is it to cater to a different market? Because personally, as a Canadian (might as well be American) I think the movie isn't as good without them. Maybe I wouldn't think that if I had never seen the original scenes to begin with though.

Well American 125 min version is missing about one hour from original 191 min.
I guess 191 min was considered to be too long for US audience. Who knows?

It's not like the US release DVD was going on sale at fricking Blockbuster! Those of us who bought it are either Scandinavian film aficionados or history buffs. It's not like we're expecting the latest Sillywood action flick.

Also, the US release DVD is a very poor quality transfer. I think someone should restore the missing time and reissue it in remastered form.

Yeah I noticed a kind of streaking effect on the very dark colours that was very distracting at times. The Overall colour quality wasn't the best either.

I realize this film kind of falls into a thin niche, but it still shouldn't be released half-assed.

If I remember correctly, 192 minute version is the director's cut, later known as the TV version. At the time producers felt the movie will not draw enough audience being over three hours long and there was a big argument between the makers. Even the director Pekka Parikka had a heart attack over this dispute.

So eventually few years later the longer running 195 minute version was made for TV series, there were 5 episodes I think. The shorter cinema version, the one you have, is what we have had in theater and VHS here in Finland too. I too liked the longer version better, but at the moment I'm not sure do we have that on DVD here or is it once again the same short one.

No posts in long time, but I gotta correct. 191min version is the actual theatre version which you can buy on DVD from nordic web stores for example. There was that tv series version too, which was even longer than original 191min version.

I must've found that version online then. It wasn't subtitled or dubbed so I decided to buy the film legitmately, only to find the 191min version heh.

Oh well, it's good to know I didn't get worse treatment for living on the other side of the globe :P
