Oh how gallant and idealistic this silly comment is! Of course there are winners in wars, both just and unjust, although not always.

What was my grandfather and his comrads supposed to do? Let those Bolshevic Bastards march right in and steal yet another country for Uncle Joe Stalin?

You soil their memory with thinking like that. From where I stand, it looks like the Finns were the winners.

Finland won!!!!

being victorious on the battlefield isn't always the same as 'winning' a war. I think the winter war is a fine example of that. Indeed, Finland's soldiers truly showed they were hardcore, but I seriously doubt they felt the same as the national soccer crew winning the World Cup afterwards.

reply

Well, one major difference between the Winter War and soccer is that our forefathers won our nation the right to be independent and live free, whereas in soccer you kick around a bloated little leather ball. In that perspective I could not give the tiniest rat's ass about any Cup, World or otherwise.

reply

You truly haven't get the movie..
"There are no winners at wars" - thats what it's saying

Please don't be so idiotic.

To DMX but mainly to hanssysmans.

I disagree. Finland had a defensive victory and I'm forever greatfull for that. Many of my relatives died in that war, and the ones that survived it never glorified the war. They just did what had to be done, for our country, for their friends. My great-uncle injured by a peace of grenade to his head, he survived. I only heard how it happened from my father when I was an adult. And had the war gone the way Stalin planned it, Finland would've been occupied in two weeks.

It was revealed only in 2004 "officially" by a Russian professor that Finland did not start the winter war. (The Shelling of Mainila). A fact that all the Finnish people have always known, but Russia kept teaching it wrong to all generations even after the war.

I dont hate Russian people, I have known quite a few as I live in a border town. (5 kilometers to russian border). A person can be jugded individually, but not from past happenings. Winter war was fought nearly 70 years ago. It was not a "soccer match", it was a war. Well, I have to make a final statement where I DO agree with you DMX, there are no winners at wars when you think about it from a one persons view. One might submit to a slavery rather than experience a death of a spouse or a relative. However, from the whole county's perspective, the nation fought together for it's freedom all for each other.

Maybe some of you know a famous Latin quote..

"Qui desiderat pacem praeparet bellum"
"If you want peace prepare for war"

When I read about the Winter War, I wondered what Stalin thought prior to attacking. Perhaps he thought the Finns would roll over and simply die? Obviously, he got alot to think about and his Russian divisions were cut to pieces. It's a credit to Finland that she found the tremendous courage to face up to the grim odds at the time. I think she inherently knew that when dealing with the "bear" you can't be weak.

reply

Gee, i thought finland became independent before the war. Also, maybe if the old butcher Mannerheim and his fascist friends had'nt been so willing to be the lapdog of hitler...

reply

Rizla... what the *beep* are you talking about?!!!!
Is that some official announcement from Kremlin that you're reading out loud?

reply

Finland seeked allies like USA and UK before turning to Germans. As we know, the Germans helped, USA and UK did not.

Which is logical since Stalin was an ally to West.

Wipe that dog cum off your dork face and read some history, returd.

Canada big.

reply

How nicely put. But I was wrong.

In Winter War Germans were still allies with SU so they did not help Finland. It was after that.

I have to correct myself, UK did send some help. They sold 20 and gave extra 10 Gloster Gladiator aeroplanes.

US sold some planes too and money was collected from citizens to help Finland.
