I think this film is AWFUL!! it's so depressing, its so awful, i almost couldnt see the whole thing, but my friend made me, even though she hated it too.. How come you like it?

reply

I don't know... Great script, great acting... a really poetic way of showing the darkest corners of human soul.
And some of the best scenes in movie history, those that let you gasping and trying to breath again...

Best regards,

Fer

I loved this movie when it came out on video in the UK. This was over a decade ago so I'd be curious to see if it still stands up today.

At the time it seemed very dark and disturbing in all the right ways. A lot of people hated it for the same reasons they hated Lynch and Cronenberg movies. The difference is that the latter two continued to plow their 'weird-arthouse' furrow till the world noticed while Trueba's other movies are in a much 'sunnier' style so 'Mad Monkey' seems to have disappeared into obscurity.

I seem to remember Trueba praising Billy Wilder in his Oscar acceptance-speech for 'Belle Epoque' which suggests he may have intended 'Mad Monkey' to play as a (very)dark COMEDY!

I also love this movie, an am trying to get a copy on DVD or vhs if it has to be... Love Jeff Goldblum in this role. Love the darkness, the lust, the twisted obsession! [email protected] if you can point me in the direction of a dvd for sale...but i also like Mr Frost, which is slow, yet mysterious...

I am only gonna say this once, and forgive if I offend. This movie features a spectacular cunnilingus scene. Go Jeff!

Any chance this will ever be released on DVD?

I shall urinate in your bone marrow.

This movie is one I first found about three weeks ago. It was not so popular, I suppose.

I did find a laserdisc copy of this in an electronic shop that is closing after several decades in business, and the owner has apparently put some of his personal collections of movies (in five different formats - VHS, CED, laserdisc, DVD, and Blu-Ray) into his closing sale. (He also even had at least one DIVX DVD disc - those required a special player, and an internet connection(phone) to verify you had paid for a 24-hour license to view the movie!!! And you bought the DIVX discs seperately, but could only watch them with a current license!).

Since I had not seen this title before (TWISTED OBSESSION on that laserdisc), it caught my attention, and I came to IMDB to get some information...

If there are laserdisc copies, and there are, you might be able to get a copy somehow. Then all you need is a laserdisc player to view it.

This movie is on Amazon inside a DVD set called "Excellent Eighties 50 Movie Pack." It's on Disk 9. The picture quality is horrible, though. Full Frame, interlaced, and it looks like it was ripped from VHS.

Film critic Mark Kermode raves about this and compares it to the recently released "Berberian Sound Studio".

This is my all-time indie favourite - within the category of the existential creepy and surreal category. I've tried tracking down any novel written by the novelist of whom this movie is based, with no luck. And the director and screenwriters don't seem to have written much else in english.

Can anyone recommend a movie similar to this? In terms of ambience and story.

(The dream sequence still haunt me on a regular basis "Maybe I didnt even exist")
