'It must be nice being married to a rich lawyer'

This line’s always struck me as odd as it didn’t appear M'Lynn and Drum were hurting for money either.

I always was bothered a little by that line too! I didn't understand it, as M'Lynn was head of a mental health unit & Drum (whatever he did) seemed wealthy too!

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

I think M'Lynn meant that as though Shelby had the luxury of either working or not. Considering her health, it would have probably been better for her to not work, or not work on her feet (which she did as she was a nurse).

It could have also meant that Shelby and Jackson will never have to worry about debt or unemployment.

Good grief! She was teasing her daughter. Mother's do that sometimes. It wasn't meant as a mean dig. [eyeroll]

I never said it was a "mean dig." I simply said it struck me as odd.

It bothered me because she sounded catty when she said it. As if the mother was jealous of her daughter. What kind of husband buys furniture for a gift anyways? It is for the child, not Shelby. He should have bought her somethings sweet like jewelry.

Oh now....she was teasing her my mom and I are like that alot,

That line belonged in a 1950s era film. Sheesh, you want to be rich? Why not become a successful lawyer?
